Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report identifying a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'abrupt' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'abrupt' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace (somewhere around 14k miles)' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.

Bought mine '99 pre-owned and according to its service history, the transmission was also replaced (somewhere around 14k miles).

The person I sold my 1999 996 to also recently had a transmission replaced (the dealers aren't allowed to repair them).

Funny, both tranny's were replaced before my car ever saw the track.

My 2000 Cab is awaiting go/nogo to have the gearbox replaced under the PUK goodwill scheme.
Outcome qualification: Negation, uncertainty or missing explicit repair resolution overrides the raw extraction signal.
Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.
Rennlist: 1 discussions
0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 1 adjusted by outcome qualification.
0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

i dropped my car off at the dealer for a noisy transmission. they called this morning to say it was terminal and being replaced under warranty. the car has 45.5k miles. they couldn't say what the exact problem was, it'll be sent back to porsche for the post mortem. who else has had the same problem, and did it reoccur?
A large batch of late 2002 cars and a handful of 2003's had a manufacturing defect that caused problems. These were handled by Porsche through a TSB. Mine was among them. The replacement unit was DOA with a bad bearing. The third unit has worked like a charm though. A 0-1000 mile failure is typical for a defect. 45k miles is alot rarer. I'd try to follow up and find out what the problem was.
The person I sold my 1999 996 to also recently had a transmission replaced (the dealers aren't allowed to repair them). I think his symptoms were different, he couldn't get into certain gears.
Karl
hah!
i've tracked bimmers for years and would like to think i'm easy on my equipment. i rely on this car as a daily driver, i wouldn't abuse it even though it's under warranty.
actually, the problem was abrupt. it happened when i started the car and began to roll, it sounded like small bearings rolling around. then it popped out of gear when launching from 1st. and later, when i limped it into the dealers it made a distinct "clunk" "clunk" which made every mechanic turn their head...
btw, my Gt3 on order is
sans
ceramic brakes. i opted for the standard 6-pot 'big reds'.
Funny, both tranny's were replaced before my car ever saw the track. The problem was probably the LACK of track. Once it got its needs satisfied, she's been happy ever since ;-)
My 2000 Cab is awaiting go/nogo to have the gearbox replaced under the PUK goodwill scheme. Just had the RMS and coolent header done under the same scheme.
Mine is wining quite badly in 1st and a bit in 2nd. But no problems getting into gear. The car has never been tracked.
I must say it is a bit daunting that a car in this class should need such major surgery at only 30k miles and its been serviced by the book!
