Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I was able to remove both screws and the cover drops down and the fan is loose but unless I can shift over the duct below the fan cannot drop and replace the unit.
Leading evidence: 'Replace unit' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace unit' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

As the squeaking was really beginning to bother me I ordered a HVAC blower for my 2001 996, watched the videos and read my Bentley manual, removed the soft lower cover and bottom plastic cover beneath the blower. Now no matter which way I try and compress the plastic duct it does not come out. Am I missing something? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated- it looks so simple but push/ pull to remove either side to get it out of the way to drop the old fan and nothing...
Not yet - it looks quite simple but I cant seem to compress the bellows to shift it off and drop the hvac. taking a break and will try again later this week with any new suggestions
dont know if this will help, but here are some pics of the HVAC unit that I removed. I xfered the components over to a new unit. The fan blower was easy, just unbolted and it dropped out and then I slid it into the new unit. Make sure you have all the screws out, but as you can see it simply slides in and out....there are no lock tabs or anything like that. Sounds like you might not have all the screws out. Should simply slide right down with a tug. Did you take the glove box out? a lot easier.
view under the dash with glove box out.
view of it out
view of bottom of HVAC where fan goes. It simply slides in/out once you unscrew.
Thanks for the pics ! I was able to remove both screws and the cover drops down and the fan is loose but unless I can shift over the duct below the fan cannot drop and replace the unit. How did you shift the duct left or right and remove it?
the easiest way is simply to remove the duct. Dont be afraid, this one is particularly hard because it goes in quite away on both ends making it hard to remove. For extra help you could remove the right hand vent by removing the screws that hold it in place then pulling straight out. That will give you better access.
If you dont want to do that, then just push the duct from right to left as far as you can and pull down the right hand side. It will come out!
Again the easiest way is to remove the right hand vent which gives you clear access to where the duct attached to the 90 degree vent elbow.
PS - just be careful you dont catch any wiring that runs to the actuators that are behind the duct. You dont want any issues with those, cause then it gets a lot worse fixing actuators.
Good luck!
