Notice that is a "regular letter/number stamping": ....Later engines used a " Dot Matrix" letter/number stamping .....

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a project 1999 Ocean Blue C2 that has had a lot of previous owners and some battle scars. I changed the oil today and put on the LN adapter for the oil filter. Just out of curiosity, I looked for the engine number. It was listed as M96/01 AT. Is there a way to know any more specifics about the time this replacement engine was installed? I have a Carfax which lists that the clutch was replaced at about 20,000 miles in June 2001 but has no mention of the engine. I have seen other engine numbers for replacements online but usually there are more numbers. It said that the clutch was done at the dealer in San Rafael, CA so maybe they would enlighten me? Thanks for any help decoding or trying to figure this out.

POST 2Original post

The 3rd number after the AT is the year the engine was manufactured from what I read. e.g. AT004 - 4 would be 2004. You tried calling your Porsche dealer to see if they have any history? FYI for those who read it later: AT = denotes factory replacement engine AT is an abbreviation of 'Austausch' (German for Exchange).

POST 3Original post

If you provide the entire number more information could be had about its manufacture date. M96/01AT designates it as a 3.4L replacement engine. Subsequent numbers help with the year of manufacture.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the replies. This is the entire number I could see. Ill ask the dealer, they do a cars and coffee every month I was going to go by anyway.

I would guess that is a "Rare very early 3.4 replacement" .... Was probably built very early on in 996 production hince the missing plant code, date, and serial numbers...I have seen one similar, a very rare early 3.4 x51 engine that just had " 996" stamped on it .... Notice that is a "regular letter/number stamping": ....Later engines used a " Dot Matrix" letter/number stamping .....
