Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm trying to help my dad get back into a Porsche. He's been retired for several years now, and after watching me put the electric 996 together, he's gotten the bug. Previously he owned a '74, but then he had kids and moved on... but I digress... What is the best selection for him? All he does now is golf and ski. I've suggested a Targa 4, figuring that will make it easier to load the car with clubs and cart, yet also have the most stability on the winter roads up to the slopes. Questions: Is a Targa best for loading clubs? Can you mount a ski rack on a Targa? Are there reasons he should NOT consider a Targa? How much "better" would a 4 be in the snow? I've read many say the 2-wheel drives are quite good as well. Help me help him! Any suggestions or thoughts are appreciated.

POST 2Original post

Yes on roof rack and "meh" on golf clubs. I can see why you want the targa for loading the clubs through the hatch, but I still think you will to massage the clubs to get them in across the back seats and massage them to get them out.

POST 3Original post

I have zero problems getting two (2!) sets of clubs in the back of my targa. Of course the 996 is not a targa4, that's the 997 version. There is a roof rack system for a targa but I forget the name.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Good feedback guys - I didn't realize targa 4's were only available in 997 versions... not sure what the budget may be at this point, but maybe that is acceptable. We shall see. Great to know about availability of a roof rack for a targa. OK, so 2 sets of clubs fit... that's good to see. I wonder if he can also squeeze in 2 roller carts! Ha... like clowns in a VW. Maybe he'll have to bring his equipment to test a car...

POST 5Original post

No trouble with 2 sets of clubs in the back of my 996 or my 997. However, the requirements are they need to be carry bags and the woods have to come out and get laid along side. If me and Rodney Dangerfield were headed to Bushwood...it ain't happenin'.

POST 6Original post

Here's a thread on racks. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...on-system.html

POST 7Original post

If you plan on snow driving and a -2 won't be sufficient, why not just get a C4 with a sun/moon roof?

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 11772495

Yeah, I consider a C4 the obvious choice. That said, I was just thinking Targa would make his 5-times a week trip to the golf course (in the summer) that much easier. Maybe it doesn't make a big difference. I have a cabriolet and loading items in the rear is super simple. From past experience I also know that it is a painful process to slowly beat up your interior sliding/loading stuff into the rear of a coupe, so that's why I was thinking a Targa could be a good call as my dad doesn't want a convertible. The lift over the rear deck scares me somewhat, as it would be easy to scratch. Thus... looking for the feedback!

POST 9Original post

Basket roof rack for summer and ski rack for winter.

POST 10Original post

The RWD has lots of traction in the snow but the problem.is with the engine beeing in the back, when the back end starts to slide out on ice/snow, the stability control might not be able to save your bacon. But if you drive like a normal person this shouldn't be a problem.

POST 11Original post

Hmmm...how about leaving the clubs at "the club" - and definitely the push/pull cart. I've only had my 996 for a few weeks now, but I haven't figured out how to get the clubs (the cart bag won't have a chance) and cart in there yet...and probably won't this season - That's what the SUV is for. I imagine at some point I'll give it a shot, but for now it just seems like too much hassle with too much downside potential (damage to interior). Ski racks? Sure, just be careful getting the ski's on there. I think it looks pretty cool actually, very Euro-like !

POST 12Original post

You need to get one of these sets http://www.dv8sports.com/ I got one on their recent kickstarter campaign and they play just like regular clubs. Plus they are carry-on when travelling on a plane.

POST 13Original post

I'd seriously consider a C4S Cab. Golf implies a lot of good weather driving - it's trivial to fit clubs in the back seat of a cab with the top down (depending on how heavy your golf bag is). Grab a hard top for the winter and you have the best of both worlds.

POST 15Original post

I've got a '02 Targa w/tip I'd consider selling...
