Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Install fister mufflers' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean heat and old age are the likely culprits' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I've had these replaced on every VW/Audi that I've owned (they are in horrible locations on older A6s and fill with water). I found a great DIY write up on Rennlist for disassembling the pump...it worked like a charm.
Outcome qualification: Negation, uncertainty or missing explicit repair resolution overrides the raw extraction signal.

I used whatever I had laying around, which was a lithium grease for bicycle hubs

The location of the pump should keep it fairly clean - heat and old age are the likely culprits for failure.

I did nothing to the parts that you see in the picture...everything was that clean once I disassembled the motor and blades from the plastic housing.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

Had a good DIY weekend. Here are the highlights:
Installed new Fister mufflers on my Dad's C4S. The install was smooth - took us about 3.5 hours total (we took our time). Was an easy process using the instructions floating out there. Basically you:
Remove the bumper cover and bumper
Remove the heat shields
Unbolt the mufflers (only tricky part due to small clearance on the three bolts on each side)
Mount the new mufflers on the existing "hangers"
Reverse the steps
Second DIY involved a screaming SAI pump. Fired the car up on a cold morning and immediately heard the SAI pump wail. I've had these replaced on every VW/Audi that I've owned (they are in horrible locations on older A6s and fill with water). I found a great DIY write up on Rennlist for disassembling the pump...it worked like a charm. Here's the Cliff's Notes version:
Remove pump from car (2 bolts and 1 nut, simple)
Remove pump from housing
Uncliip the connectors holding two sides of the pump case together
Disassmble the fan blades
Remove the pump motor from the housing
Lube the bearings as best you can (they're mostly sealed but you can work grease in)
Reassemble and install
Here are some photos of all the fun.
New fister.
Muffler out - ready to install.
New fister installed.
SAI pump removed.
SAI pump motor free from covers and housing.
SAI pump motor and blades.
You don't need to remove but it does give a lot of access if you do. I didn't when would pull my cans and got it down to 30 minutes....after some practice.
Yes Pete - the DIY bug bit me hard.
Removing the bumper & cover is very simple - if time allows I say do it as you have easy clearance for most of the remaining work.
I didn't replace any parts - they were surprisingly clean and in good shape. I did nothing to the parts that you see in the picture...everything was that clean once I disassembled the motor and blades from the plastic housing.
The bearings were very dry - which was causing the table saw sound. Mine sounded like a very fast table saw running through a hard material (high pitch, very loud).
The pump would have likely failed completely without lubricating the bearings. The location of the pump should keep it fairly clean - heat and old age are the likely culprits for failure.
