Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

It's been ten years since I last did a set but my memory is that you should plan on using new hex bolts for the ends of the shafts.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Check around/ask around to see if there is an axle restoration shop near you . Generally speaking if they cater to race teams they will rebuild you excellent quality with long term durability .
What year - model 996? C2 or C4? Front or Rear? There are axles out there 1 @ $120, a pair fir $232, for C4S. Others are also out there. If for the front, get new official Porsche nuts for R&R.
In addition, a CV joint is not that difficult to rebuild/regrease, process just makes a mess. If you do the rebuild process, pay attention to how/what order it came apart. The center "star" looking part is different on each side.
YMMV
I highly recommend rebuilding your existing. I have rebuilt a couple of mine until recently when I swapping in some 997 ones. Larger diameter shafts. But yeah, they are simple to work on, just take progress photos on your disassembly.
I agree with doing it yourself. As mentioned, it's not difficult but IS very messy ( and the old grease smells horrible). I've only done this on BMWs but I can't imagine it being much different on a 996. It's been ten years since I last did a set but my memory is that you should plan on using new hex bolts for the ends of the shafts. You can buy them from the dealer or much cheaper from places like McMaster-Carr. OP, you don't list your location or anything about your particular car but if it's lived in a place with 'weather', I would expect the hex bolts may have a lot of gunk in the hex recess part of the bolt. Before attempting to remove them, use something like a dental pick to get all the gunk out so the hex wrench gets seated completely in the bolt. I even bought a brand new quality hex bit because I did NOT want to strip one of these bolts.
Good luck with which ever route you decide to take!
Unsure if you're aware but pictured is a BMW E30 rear axle.
The GKN rebuild kit I linked to only works for the inner CV joints.
The wheel side joint is apparantly not available from GKN.
