Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just curious, has anyone tangled with the boy (or girl)-racer crowd? Here in LA, they are a dime a dozen, and they always seem to be looking for a race. Last night I passed a low-slung Accord with a huge wale-tail and he almost made a U-turn to catch up with me. Now I've seen the movie, and I expect those cars to be really fast. How serious is the risk of being embarrassed by a $15,000 souped-up rice rocket?

POST 2Original post

Yeah, I guess we all get that. Let's face it, these cars turn up the testosterone in everyone. Even those that aren't driving them. I get it all the time. Some of these street-bangers I am sure can give you a hard time but not many of them are all they are souped up to be. I had one yesterday. A boy-racer, cap to the side of his head. Seated low like he had no seat in the car. Bumf, Bumf, Bumf, Bumf.....base speakers puming out some sort of crap music. He was drivin a friggin Volks Golf. He was revvin at the lights, just wantin a race. I let the tosser burn his rubber and testosterone off and watched him head off at **** poor accelaration. Meanwhile, I just set off at medium speed. My stero is beating out to sweet music (Spin Doctors) and I have the knowledge that I don't have anything to prove by burning off rubber like that since I am driving a serious sports car. Personally, I just let em go by. That way, it gets them even more pissed off.

POST 3Original post

The other night getting off the freeway making a left hand turn, a younger guy screatches up to my right. Minding my own business thinking about the girl I'm about to go see he looks over and says nice car, I thank him. The next thing he says is I'll race you with a smirk on his face. I look over again and I say to him well what you got there a Ford Focus? He says yeah but its an svt with 170 horsepower. I started laughing and drove away!!

POST 4Original post

I got smoked by a VW Corrado in my 355. I ran into him at a gas station a week later to find he had some nutty bolt-on turbo craziness.

POST 5Original post

So. California is ground zero for boy-racer econo-boxes (usually Hondas). Most of 'em are junk but I've encountered a few Civics built for import drags that I don't mess with...one of which lives down the street from me, a kid's 400 hp civic that tops the scales at 2,000 lb.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

You see, that's embarrassing, P1CR! A buddy of mine who drives a '97 TT was telling me that a freakin Mitsubiship Eclipse stuck right to his tail under WOT on the freeway... I guess Scouser is right, you're better off ignoring them, there is no glory in beating a Honda Civic to the next red light.

POST 8Original post

Earlier this week I was cruising down the highway at 60 in a 55 when a Camaro/Firebird passes me doing at least 90. He slammed on his brakes and kept motioning me to catch up. I just tried to ignore him until we were going about 50 and I turned off onto a side road to get away from him. My thought is always, what do I have to gain from beating a Camaro? BTW I am starting to see alot of the Hondas with body kits etc around but none of them ever seem to be finished.

POST 9Original post

it's funny I'm reading this topic. On the way home tonight from work I had a guy in a blown Ford Pinto station wagon honking and waving his arms for a race. He might have beaten me because it looked as though he had some very unatural things going on under the hood but no way would I give him the satisfaction. It was a damn pinto!

POST 10Original post

the japanese cars need bubble gum slicks to break lower than 13's on the street as they are too light and hop off the launch. Combined with small axles and 6 inch wide stock tires, even if they do a +2 tire upgrade it doesn't help at all. Coming from those import type racing crowds 5 years ago, I know this for a fact when I used to go to the illegal races in San Jose area. My friend's M3 E36 (older gen) did 13's which was very fast at that time, and no, I repeat no rice rocket unless Supra, Rx7, 300zx came close as the these ones were rear wheel and better takeoffs. My friend's Integra had 300hp's turbocharged but could never break below 14's on regular tires. slap a set of bubble gums drop the clutch from 6k and the thing takes off like a rocket. Just make sure that the axles dont snap as they do go every 5k miles or so of such abuse. So I doubt you'll have to get worried about being blown away, unless you let them get ahead early in the race. Race them past 100 and they'll be a small dot in your mirror.

POST 11Original post

musicmovesme, are you in the south bay CA? I saw a similar hot rod pinto 8 years ago in a race down there...that thing does mid 13's from what I remember.

POST 12Original post

Personally, I think it's irresponsible to discuss engaging in street racing, particularly stuff like "race them past 100 and they'll be a small dot in your mirror". That may be an accurate assessment of the relative performance levels of the two cars, but advocating street racing is not wise. Aside from the potential threat to innocent drivers and pedestrains, what happens when you don't lose that Civic at 110? Do you figure you'll leave him at 130 and push on? 150? An encounter with some uneven pavement or roadway undulations at those speeds can spell disaster for the racers and anyone else unfortunate enough to be in the way when the crashing starts. Here in San Diego county we've had something like sixteen people killed in street races in the last couple of years. You want to race, take it to the dragstrip or a track.

POST 13Original post

It's not worth it, it's just a testosterone thing and if that's the case....like my brother-in-law says: "you're in a Porsche, you've already got them beat". Besides, these Ricers are real fast and light and if I really just wanted to go fast in a straight line, I'd have bought a Viper.

POST 14Original post

You said it, Lomcevak! One time some kids in a nearly killed themselves trying to pull up next to me at a red light, and challenged me with revving engine, hand signals, etc (all with my wife in the passenger seat!). I ignored them off the green, but they spot a Ferrari coming from the opposite direction. So they whip into my lane, slam the brakes and make an illegal U-turn to go pick their next fight. People like that are not auto enthusiasts, car guys, or even sportsmen. They're just immature kids. Beating them in a street race isn't the most noble of goals. Test your car on the track. Test your ego in the game of life. And you'll never have to be embarrased that you bought a car that kids could not appreciate.

POST 15Original post

i think we're all missing the point that the bad thing about racing on the street is the endagering other people. I hope my posting of this info regarding the strengths and weaknesses of both cars does not lead you to believe that I condone this racing at all. I merely stated why they won't win and how you would beat them in the end. Bottom line is that all racing has its pitfalls, and if someone is to engage into a race either way track or street they should know the risks of death, just don't kill someone else for your foolishness. I'm sure all of us has the urge to take their car to a high limit both on and off the track. Its not always about ego but also to see what your car can do.

POST 18Original post

It's not about speed, it's about stupidity. Here's the penalty for street racing in California. A first conviction on a street racing violation means: Minimum county jail sentence of 24 hours and maximum of 90 days. Vehicle probably impounded for at least 30 days. Owner responsible for vehicle's towing and storage charges ($1,000 or more). If owner fails to pay, vehicle could be sold at a lien sale. Anyone who aids or abets a street race also faces a maximum 90-day jail sentence Doesn't seem worth it does it?

POST 19Original post

Too Fast(for the streets- definitely) Too Furious(obviously) Race 'em(naaahhh00 wafur?). I live in Manila and over here, they are a dime a dozen-cubed. On the other hand there are only perhaps 50 986's, and perhaps a hundred if at all 911of all series. What amuses me is that they seem to leave the boxsters and the "stock" 993's, and 996's but Ive seen a 993C2S and C4S get checked out. The P owners just let em go. What amazes me is that they show no respect whatsoever to the 993tt's and especially the 996tt's. Perhaps, its because there are only about two dozen of those here. The kids think only old foggies drive em. Ill share this though none of them ever tried to throw the gauntlet at a GT3. ; )>

POST 20Original post

Hmmm Interesting thread I have engaged and been in engaged in a few "street races" in the short time I've had my 996. I labor, to some degree, under the illusion that I am in control. Clearly, I am not completely in control....ever! The vast majority of knowledge is that which you don't even know you don't know! Random pieces of metal waiting to cause a blow out and roll over lurking, grandmoms who accidently knock off there specticals and swerve into your lane, etc. These are serious hazzards 10 miles below speed limit and generally more so at 2 to 3 times speed limit. I would venture to guess that not many of us travel posted speed limits all of the time...Risky? I guess what I am saying is every time we step out of our door we are at risk. Every time we belt up and hit the highway more risk. Blowing through a yellow light...risk to us and others. 5-10 over posted speed perhaps more risk to ourrselves and others. I guess its all a matter of how much risk you are willing to take/responsiblitiy for your actions you can shoulder. Isn't is? Jason

POST 21Original post

Something tells me that most of the kids would be totally lost out on a real track. Braking/turn in/throttle modulation/apexing are were real skill comes into play. Anyone can point and shoot. While it may be tempting to waste some wannabe at a stop light, compared to the track experience it is just sooooo not happening. Remember, adults go to tracks to get their yaya's out, kids race on the street and endanger everyone. Cheers, Chris

POST 23Original post

This problems seems to happen all around the world, but everywhere is a little different. Here, a lot of M3 or Audi's RS, S, wants to race. For me it's simple, i let them believe (once 'n while is true!!) that the'y're faster than me, I let them go ahead, then if there's a radar, it will be for them!!!
