Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Current on my 99 C2 the rear tire size is 265/35ZR18. My question is, what are the plus and minuses and even if possible of moving up a size to 285/35ZR18. Thanks.

POST 2Original post

first question is what size rims front do you have? Next what is your alignment set at right now? Third what do you think of the handling, too much understeer?

POST 3Original post

I went from 265/35s to 285/30s at the rear but changed wheels at the same time with 1/2" wider fronts. The 20mm difference between 285s and 265s where compensated by wider front wheels (same size tire in both cases). The grip improved markedly, and there's a theoretical improvement in acceleration (smaller rolling diameter). This is a worthwhile update that pre '02 996s can benefit from.

POST 4Original post

I was told you need wider rear wheels to safely install the 285/30's. I too bought a set of wheels which included 8.5 fronts carrying 245/35 rubber. My rears are 10x18 which I believe is a step up from the standard pre '02 wheels. This of course was accomplished on my 99. I sold the 99 but still have the wheels and tires (see my ad in the classifieds).

POST 6Original post

I went from 265/35/18 to 285/30/18 with no problems. People warned of an increase of understeer but I didn't notice any.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for all the replies/advice. I'm going to step up to the 285/35 and let you know what happens. Thanks all.
