Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Check just' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check air filter' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
These cars need lots of air - but good points above about checking the air filter.

Suggestion
As a matter of fact i remember when i was more of a kid, I used to dismantle the air filter in my cars to clean the injectors (320-323i-etc..).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Can anyone help with this? I have a '99 996, and just noticed this loud pneumatic noise (like a "PFFFT")after hitting the throttle, right before the engine revs. i had never noticed it before and it doesn't sound normal to me. It is consistent everytime I hit the gas. Any ideas/feedback? Thanks in advance...
I think it's air being sucked into the engine. I have a cab and its pretty noticable with the top down. These cars need lots of air - but good points above about checking the air filter. Especially in Los Angeles, where there's so much smog, it's a good idea to keep an eye on the filter as well as the AC filter up front...
I have been chasing that "phhh-ing" problem since day one. I do not think it is the filter as I have just installed a new one (Fabspeed) plus GHL: header and Tubi exhaust. It drives me NUTS. At this point, I would spend anything to get rid of it. If you have luck, please let me know. <img src="http://avao1.com/tires/fromfront2.jpg" alt=" - " />
well, the curious thing is that i am fairly certain it didn't make that noise before. well, i have 6 weeks left on the warranty and was thinking of getting the car thoroughly checked-out (will porsche dealers do a PPI on a car that is not being purchased...?0, so i will point out the noise and let everyone know what they say.
thanks for your feedback
Well, here is an interim update: the guys at Beverly Hills Porsche said that the PFFFT! noise was normal, that it is the intake. We listened to another car, the mechanic said it sounded the same, but i am not convinced, I couldn't really hear it. I have an oil change scheduled in a couple of weeks at another dealer, I will get their opinion as well...
the pff noise is regular on all 996's if it is really the normal pffff noise you're reffering.. actually i love the sound of it, it comes as soon as you press the pedal before it really revs up.. it's like the engine opening up its lungs and it's actually what happens: the throttle opening moves away to release air to the manifold..
If you open the air filter and throttle up the pffffff sound is even more appreciable, even on normal cars (remember the good old weber days..)
enough pffff from me now,
Pfffff, am tired..

WAZ: it seems very similar to what you describe, but just to make sure: it sounds like compressed air coming OUT, not a sucking sound as described by SAFETYWORK...?
Yes, it's a very short throw of air breathing in the engine.. PFFFF brawwwwwwww, PFFFFff brawwwwww... more like it!
As a matter of fact i remember when i was more of a kid, I used to dismantle the air filter in my cars to clean the injectors (320-323i-etc..). A very fast pull on the accelarator cable would trigger the same noise as well as a deep cruel grin on my face! (that was the time i starting evolving my love to mechanical equipments!)
I dont know really why this noise is so obvious on the 996's WITH the air filter in place.. but i like it! Anyway silver, do have your car checked just for the benefit of the doubt..
