I had one replaced on my 99 Carrera and the dealer later admitted that it was not the problem (problem was actually the DME cable).

Given that they are on back order, and have to be brought in from Germany, it seems that this item is being replaced fairly frequently.

Check engine lite is one, and the mechanic at my dealership told me that MAF's "broke" all the time. At $350.00 + a pop, shouldn't these be made to last? Given that they are on back order, and have to be brought in from Germany, it seems that this item is being replaced fairly frequently. Has anyone had to replace these things more than once? Thanks.

Being in the air flow path makes these very delicate hot-film air mass sensors a bit more likely to be damaged. Oil or dirt (or human touch) can all damage these sensors. I had one replaced on my 99 Carrera and the dealer later admitted that it was not the problem (problem was actually the DME cable). Perhaps, it should also be considered the most often misdiagnosed part failure.

My '99 996 Cab was just serviced for the 30k service, and on the way home the CE light lit up. MAF was replaced, though the light came back on. Took several tried before they discovered a blown out Bellows Tube and replaced with new. Probably did not need the MAF.

I just removed my screen and flow straightener and added a BMC filter. I haven't had any problems yet. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
