Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated (before I proceed to replace my whole roof section with one from a non-sunroof car).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Let me start by saying how much I hate certain dealers (I'm in Toronto and there are only two so I'll leave it up to everyone's imagination as to who I am referring to).
Here's the deal. My car has always had rattles in the sunroof area for three scenarios.
1- Sunroof closed: creaking and rattles (minor ones that irritate me)
2- Sunroof popped up at the back (vented position): no creaks but rattles over bumps that sound like Fiat built the sunroof mechanism
3- Sunroof slid open (at any position): big creaks and horrible rattles over bumps
I have had the car in to two dealerships for a total of four times to try to resolve this. Of course, both have tried to make up for their shortcomings by blaming it on my suspension (to a certain, slight degree I wouldn't argue but this has been happening long before the suspension got installed). They have adjusted, siliconed, greased up, etc. with no help or improvement whatsoever. Finally, I had it and demanded that the whole sunroof mechanism be replaced. This was done last week and the current state is:
sunroof closed: no noises (Yey!)
sunroof vented: very little rattling (oh well)
sunroof slid open: SAME F**king RATTLES and now they've added a bonus for me: I now get wind noise at highway speeds (duh)
I don't get it. I'm pretty mechanically inclined and have looked at this thing when the headliner was out. I just can't tell what could be causing these metal on metal and plastic rattles. It literally sounds like the whole assembly is loose. Did Porsche commission Fiat or Lada to design and build this sunroof? The wind noise is hopefully easy to fix by taking it back for an adjustment (it does look like they set it to close but not as far forward, up againt the front seal as was before) but I have no idea where to look for these rattles. I am insanely jealous of anyone who has a 996 without the sunroof rattles and I wish that I didn't have a sunroof.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated (before I proceed to replace my whole roof section with one from a non-sunroof car).
Thx
I have a sunroof and a rattle/creaking sound coming from the roof of the car in any postion the sunroof is in.
I took it to the dealer today. The service tech who came to take a look at my car was actually working on another car with the same issue. It appeared to be an easy fix. He showed me the car that he was working on. He took off the roof trim and pointed out the beam which had come loose on the other car.
Maybe you have a completely different issue, but it sounds like your service techs just don't want to deal with it.
I would like to learn more about this loose beam. There was one thing that I did notice (that of course the techs didn't bother considering). Once the headliner is comletely removed, you can see a structural beam at the back of the roof, right against the back window that has been welded in place at either side. In the middle, it is not secired to the actual roof panel and cl=omes very close to hitting it at big bumps. I asked the tech to stick on that felt tape that Porsche generously provides their techs with. He stuck it between the beam and the roof panel to absorb any impacting sounds. I wonder if the beam that you're talking about is in the sunroof panel or the roof itself.
