Even when the clutch was replaced (normal maint.) there were no signs of rms problems, although it was replaced anyway.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
We have a 1999 996 C2 which we've had for about 5 years now. Until recently we've never really paid too much attention to the oil pressure at idle, but lately it seems a little lower than normal. The car has about 145,000km on it.
When it is fully warmed up, at idle (around 7-800 rpm) it seems to be around 1.25-1.5 bars. I remember it being more around 2 to 2.5 bar when it had fewer miles. When you move off (rev) the pressure come back up an is usually about 5 bar at 3,000km unless extremely hot. The engine uses no more oil than it ever did (usually not enough to bother filling up between 7-10,000km oil change intervals). Oil pressure light has never come on.
Should I be worried? All the manual says it that the pressure should be a minimum of 3 bar at 5,000 rpm. If my oil pressure was only 4 bar at 5K I think I'd be worried...
Any input appreciated!
Jeff
Jeff: I think it's great that you've got a car with almost 145,000km on it and it's still going strong. You've obviously taken great care of it, and it's giving you longevity, reliability, and pleasure in return.
Chuck
Hi all,
Thanks for the feedback. Good to know that others' oil pressure are in the same range.
Actaully, all things considered, the car has been reasonably reliable. An a/c line had to be replaced a few years ago, as well as the mass air flow sensor and a cam position sensor I believe. Even when the clutch was replaced (normal maint.) there were no signs of rms problems, although it was replaced anyway.
After all these miles - the only existing problems are one of the cooling fans doesn't come on high properly at radiator so that needs to be fixed ASAP, and the engine lifters are quite noisy when first started. Once the car is driven down the street to the first stop sign - quiet. The prospect of replacing all the lifters (if possible) isn't particularly appealing... I've heard that a lot of these cars suffer from lifter noise at idle when cold however.
I also was having strange readings,... Replaced the Oil Pressure Sender. Problem fixed.

When I buy a Porsche, I buy it to drive it! I've had mine since 4-24-07 and already have 5,000 miles I've put on it! My drive to work is 40 miles, all country roads and I drive it like the Nberg ring
.
When I hit 4,000 rpms, I remember why I love these cars so much. You'd think I'd get enough with racn my 964 but I just don't.
Good luck with it.
I wonder what the most miles any Rennlist member has put on a 996? I'm at 65,000 and going strong!!!
After sitting for two weeks, my '02 C4S pressure was 3.75 Bar at idle. After the car warmed up with a half hour of driving, it dropped to 2.5 Bar at idle. Is it bad for the pressure to be that high?
I'm over 76k miles.
How many rpm are you running at idle? 3.75 seems a bit high...not too sure what that means....but the mearsurements don't mean much until we can agree upon what rpm we're all running when you say you're at idle? I run around 1.5 bar at 650 rpm after the car has reached normal operating temps.
I can't say the exact rpm, but from the gauge it seems around 700 rpm (a bit less than 800 anyway). When you first start the car and the oil is cold, the pressure at idle is 5 bar!
My Car is at 2.5 bars at warm idle 750 rpm and I hit 4.5 bars at warm rev 3000 rpm. It seems that we are kind of all over the place.....I'm going to replace my sensor unit since I dont know how old the other is.....also the gauge needle bounces around a little
Wow, 10-yr-old thread. I have pretty high oil pressure on my car. Never drops below 1.5 bars, and usually hovers around 2 bar at idle (675 RPMs). I'm pegged at 5 at 2500 RPM and up. 0w-40 oil
When weather and car are warm and AC is off, oil pressure occasionally drops to bring the warning light on at idle after getting off the highway . With AC on, never a problem and it stays in that 7-800 range.
If some people get 2.5 bar at idle and others only getting 1 bar, is there some sort of culprit to this problem ?? Worn bearings worn lifters ageing chain tensioners , anyone got any ideas from a certain trend, I know there's the relief spring in the oil pump but I've done that on mine , engine rebuilt with new bearings , new oil pump but didn't replace the lifters and I get 1 bar without air con on hot idle and 1.25 with air con on, been doing some work and found some sealant in the oil pick up recently, wasn't loads but two reasonable size pieces, haven't run the engine again yet as I'm doing work on the clutch and flywheel so hoping for better pressure after!!
Im also guessing idle speeds and temps are differing between engines. Having 2.5 at idle seems pretty high, so I wonder if the oil temp is truly at 100C-ish.
Zombie thread bump.
I did some incredible mountain road driving recently with 80-90F ambient temps. We hit the Georgia Dragon, Tail of the Dragon, Cherohala Skyway, Blue Ridge Parkway, the Rattler, and War Woman. Once my '99 is hot she always has an idle oil pressure of 1.0....possibly a hair's width under the 1.0 mark which is what always spooks me a bit. I never get an oil pressure warning light and the coolant temps never go past the right edge of the 0 of the "180" font. A 997 oil pressure spring was installed about 9 years ago and I always use Driven DT40 oil. UAOS installed 2 years ago. New coolant, water pump, and LNE low temp thermostat were installed recently as well.
Is this anything that I should be concerned about?
Eventually the oil pressure sending unit will go. But you will k ow its failing because it will register crazy behavior and then ultimately you will get the scary red light.
Fwiw, I would use DI50 with that type of driving which will help firm up the oil pressure.
I would also run the Track drain with your UAOS which will allow you to run an extra quart or two of oil over full which helps with oil pressure in a big way.
Skip will probably have some more ideas.
There are 58 lubricaton points/leak paths in the m96 engine,..each one having a specific tolerance range from to tight, to too loose, to just right ..
Oil temperture rangeing for 90c to 110c are commn...
Oil viscosity ranges from low 40 weight to high 50 weight are common...
Idle RPMS can vary between 700 RPM tp 850 RPM and will make a difference...
That said oil pressures at idle of around 1 bar ( 14.5 psi ) are typical....but can/will vary from individual case to case dependant on the above variables
The 'Definatve Test" is to install a manual guage on the back 2 head port and run the engine at exactly 4k RPM at exactly 90C oil temp with Mobl 1 0w-40 weight oil.....The presusre should be above 4 Bar...(58 PSi ) ....
It was definitely in the back of my mind that I should make the switch to a 50 weight so I guess I'll give DT50 or DI50 a try on the next interval.
Btw with the regular UAOS, can't I already add an extra quart of oil compared to stock? I'm running 9qts at the moment.
Have you tested the Blow-by on your engine ? Very easy test ...If not correct scientific answer is "most likely".....The regular UAOS is 4x more efficient and has an Optical Warning System " just in case"....so most likely... The Optional Track Drain Kit adds the Dual Drain-backs....
On my '99 Carrera when it's fully warmed up I get <1 bar oil pressure. Can't figure out what's going on with the car but no engine or oil lights, no weird behavior, car hums along normally.
Currently using Liquimoly molygen 5w-40 and replaced the oil pressure switch with a new OEM unit and the low pressure at idle persists. What do I do from here? lol
Our gauges aren't super accurate....Do you get good pressure at 4k rpm?
Perhaps switch to a 50w oil, and see if it helps.
No 996 should be left idling, rev that up
