Guess lots of people find them cheaper (or non winter-used?) in the US and then bring them up here to sell.

Super clean, IMS done, no accidents, has service records.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I was at a Porsche Club event last weekend & I brought my new to me 996.1 C2 aero in Lapis over Savannah (6-speed) with 66k mi (106k kms). Super clean, IMS done, no accidents, has service records.
In chatting with other owners about maket values of lots of models, I was open to share I paid the equivalent of $36,275 USD ($50K Canadian), which included tax. Felt mostly market correct for such a near-perfect example.
Multiple people seemed genuinely astonished that a 996.1 would be that expensive and said something like well, if it makes you happy I
guess
thats good.
That left me wondering did I wildly overpay?
I would rather pay up for a well maintained 996 than buy one for dirt cheap amd have to sort it out.
Below are estimated costs for parts and labor hours for typical refresh items and improvements. If you are DIY guy and can find parts on sale, it will be less than I list below.
1. Aero kit and paint = $10-15k
2. Refresh Engine Parts = $8-10k
3. Refresh Suspension =$8-10k
4. Refresh exhaust = $8-10k
5. Interior Refresh = all depends on your requirements, but it isn't cheap.
Enjoy your 996!
You didnt overpay. Thats a fair price for .1 factory aero, manual coupe with a documented service history.
Peoples perception of a 996s value is skewed by the amount of neglected ones available for sale.
So many were produced and they got really cheap for a long time.
A combination that will continue to influence the market for the foreseeable future.
They dont understand spending 36K when you can find a 996 on marketplace for 17K.
BAT .1 results from the last couple of days
The conventional wisdom I have seen here is that a well sorted 996 will cost you close to $40k and that seems to be about right.
As a data point I bought a pretty nice 996.2 Cab last month with 36k miles for $30k and then spent another $7k doing IMS, RMS, Clutch/flywheel, Water pump and a few other things. I might have paid slightly too much but it was the color and optioned the way I want and was relatively low miles.
My impression from watching a lot of BAT is I would have had to spend a maybe a few $k more for an equivalent coupe and a recently done IMS seems to factor into the final price. You start seeing them get down into the mid $20s range for over 100k miles. The only cheap 996 in the upper teens/low 20s are cars with an accident on the Carfax. Sometimes you can catch one on Facebook marketplace for cheaper.
You could have probably gotten it cheaper if you had been willing to go with a generic silver car and without the options but then it wouldnt really be the car you wanted. You could have probably gotten it cheaper if it needed an IMS but would you have rolled the dice and not done that? I probably would have looked for a lower miles car at that price but who knows when that color and options package might come along.
My feeling is that a lot of people dont take everything into account with the history and present mechanical situation with a car and compare them to problematic cars or one off smoking deals.
Just saw this thread and I am not a 996 owner but that is a lot of car for the money. If you love driving it and you look back at it when you walk away after you park it then you didnt over pay. If you are going to keep it and drive it for awhile you didnt over pay. People seem to worry if other people will approve of how good of a deal they got - its more important to drive great cars than get great deals. Nothing wrong with a great deal but its okay to get a fair or even bad deal once in awhile and drive a great car!
Everything you said resonates, but this is an especially great point I didnt mention it, but I only ever entertained cars with no accidents on the CarFax.
Ive owned cars with claims and they can be a real PITA to sell.
You're fine. Nothing with that price for a sorted, factory XAA car.

There's a scarcity of well-loved NA 996 cars. It's a fact cheap owners got their hands on these cars years ago, making most of those today barely buyable or worth refreshing unless had for next to nothing. This delta will only continue. Guys (and ladies) all over are compelled with adding a $28-$45k modern classic into their lives. Air cooled is too old and expensive for them. Meanwhile enthusiasts (Euro cars, watches) will lament when the 996 market continues changing on them (maybe out of fear the market will price them out).
I was looking for a 968 and stumbled on my C4S. I literally knew nothing about it but…it was beautiful, in great shape, and drove spectacularly. It’s a high-mile car (115K miles) but has been very well cared for. Being an uneducated buyer, I thought $34K was a steal when the seller threw out that number. I did a little quick research (BaT) and bought it.
Now, in retrospect, I think I paid a bit too much, but, I’m okay with it. Interior and paint look like a 25K mile car. I love driving it an, as
@74goldtarga
says, I can’t help but look back at is as I walk away.
Like with many hobbies, if you have to worry about price/cost of everything, maybe one shouldn't get in to that particular hobby. Could I have saved a bit? I suppose, but I am very happy with my purchase/investment and am now on a proactive maintenance, refresh/upgrade path.
Bottom line from my perspective: Drive that sucker and enjoy it!!
It's really hard to compare 2 transactions as there are just so many variances e,g
# of owners
Type of owners
Condition of the cars (any accidents/garaged)
Maintenance history
Modified or stock
One Key Fob or two
How was it driven (daily vs pleasure, tracked or not)
to name few
If you are happy and convinced about the condition of the car, few thousand dollars really shouldn't make much difference
I have always believed in " You either pay upfront or you pay later" & trust me, there's no way around it.
You are not dreaming about owning a Porsche, you own one now, so go out and drive it and DO NOT save if for the next owner.
I read this entire thread last night. It was a great read.
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...ffordable.html
There was a post in particular that spoke to me, about the categories of common 996 owners.
I fall into the category of former entry-lever car owners that can now step up into a 911 after previously having owned a 944, 928, and 2x Boxsters. (986 & 987.2).
Why worry about it?
Are you happy with the car? Were you happy with the deal when you bought it? If these answers are yes. Then stop caring and enjoy the 996!
I just enjoy and not think about the cost. I always drive my c4s hard because gurus tell me its healthier for the engine. I dont argue. I have to fill her up weekly for a weekend car lol.
That thread is a terrible read because it supports my hobby/addiction to BaT and eyeballing additional 996s and 986s and thinking maybe I should buy a third Porsche.

It is rare but you can find a one or two owner 996 that has been cared for. My sister in law paid over $40K for a well sorted 996 that she has no worries about driving. I paid in the mid 20s for a well cared for car that needed the IMS, RMS, water pump, and refresh everything. In the end I spent more than what she paid, but we got the same thing: a well sorted 996. Just came off the track today at Lime Rock.
Don't sweat the money talk. As people have shown, for a well cared for XAA you're definitely in the ballpark.
I assume you're probably in Canada since you also mentioned the CAD value. So am I. I think the older Porsche community in Canada is a bit behind the real north American market in terms of values, especially the 996 market which has been drifting up even post COVID.
I am, yes, out in the Niagara Peninsula in Ontario.
Its kind of incredible how many Porsches are imported from the US market. All of mine have been Canadian market cars, but Im always astounded when shopping. Guess lots of people find them cheaper (or non winter-used?) in the US and then bring them up here to sell.
No. Did not overpay. Consider the group of people telling you this. I would guess all of them have a much newer Porsche and have no desire to own and older one. Were any of them 996 enthusiasts? Unless they are trading the older ones, the only thing they will know about them are all the easily visible stories of how cheap they are. No thoughts as to conditions or options. The car you have is awesome and if you keep up the same maintenance schedule you'll be able to pass the value to the next caretaker.
A good Taco for that price 👍 well done. A Taco tail alone just sold for $4500 plus fees in a few years you will be looking even better $$ if that matters, welcome to Taco world and enjoy your car.

Pretty sure I overpaid for my SY XAA 220 030. And Im so glad I did. Its the one Ive loved the most and the only one Ive never thought about parting with. The extra money was forgotten about almost instantly. Curiously mine was fully imported from Canada at some point. Has a cute little maple leaf on the vin door sticker
