Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

Dealer fixed it under warranty, and I've not had a problem since.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just purchased a 2002 Carrera 2 with 8500 miles on it. I noticed that there is a quarter size oil spot on the garage floor underneath the left side of the engine. It only happens when the engine has been running for a while. There is no constant drip. I looked under the engine and it looks like there may be a small leak righ in front of the exhaust. I have heard people say if the car sat for too long that the seals can dry and sometimes crack and leak. And sometimes the seal will need to rehydrate and hopefully the leak will stop. Any ideas?

POST 2Original post

Most likely, you have a leak in the rear main seal. This is a design problem with the 996. Your dealer will know what to do. If they cannot fix it, they will send you a brand new engine, no kidding. It happened to my 2001 c2 cab.

POST 3Original post

Could also be the cam cover as well other then the RMS. It's right behind the driver side exhaust. It leaked early in its life as well as the rms and all fixed under warranty Regards. Mike

POST 4Original post

I bought my 2002 with a leaky cam cover. Dealer fixed it under warranty, and I've not had a problem since.

POST 5Original post

I hope it's under warranty, but do take it in...
