Suggestion

I would guess the cost adds up to replace all 4 but they're definitely emissions related.

Yeah I understand them wanting to recoup some of that cost, but to estimate an hour and half of labor to run codes is a bit excessive.

the problem with most service techs I have run into is that they would rather make up an answer to a question than admit that they didnt know the correct answer.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I got a check engine light on a couple of weeks ago and went to the dealer, he hooked it up to the PST2 and said that the car had a cylinder misfire code. He reset it and the light went off (he also did the OBC hack which I thought was pretty cool of him). Anyway, the light came back on after a while (maybe fourth or fifth time driving it) and I have an appointment to get it looked at on Monday. Went to an indenpendant shop in the area and he wanted to charge me $108 just to hook it up the PST2 and run the codes. I declined that as I know it only takes like five mintues to run the code. He then proceeded to tell me that the CEL can come on for ignition coils. I have researched this issue on this forum and on funcars and never saw a mention of such a thing. Does this guy know what he is talking about? Also, should I expect that the dealer is going to charge me a bundle of money for checking it out (he did all that stuff for free last time, I am a couple of months out of warranty) or is this something that they can do for free if I ask nicely? Any input is greatly appreciated especially anyone else's experience with the CEL. Thanks, Ash

POST 2Original post

I was told that the PST2 is expensive. Most independent shop would like to charge a certain fee for using it. I had the engine light on a couple of months ago. To the best of my memory it was the mass air flow sensor. My dealer replaced it while I was waiting. It took about 2 hours.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah I understand them wanting to recoup some of that cost, but to estimate an hour and half of labor to run codes is a bit excessive. The guy at the independant shop said the machine costs $30K and the dealer told me it was $8K. the problem with most service techs I have run into is that they would rather make up an answer to a question than admit that they didnt know the correct answer. Very misleading and a bit frustrating. Thanks for the response.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the tip Bronco Billy, I will check that out. Anyone know off hand what the length of the emissions warranty is? Thanks in advance. Ash996

POST 6Original post

My book says federal emissions is 8yr/80k. BTW it's probably the O2 sensor.

POST 7Original post

There are 4 O2 sensors on the 996. 1 before and 1 after each cat. I would guess the cost adds up to replace all 4 but they're definitely emissions related. Well the pre cat ones are for sure. The ones after the cat are for OBD2 compliance and are there to check that the cat's are working correctly. Colin

POST 8Original post

You can get a generic ODB2 reader for aobut $300 and read and clear the codes yourself. I have one in my 2000 996 right now and have read and cleared the codes, I keep getting P1119...forget now what it is but the car is still running fine and it goes out on its own regularly. Isn't great that the check engine light no longer has any real meaning... Jim

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for all the replies, Addictionms, that is exactly what I want to do, go somewhere where they can tell me what the code is (with an ODB2 reader) and have them clear it and I can decide whether I want to address the situation. That reader you got allows you to use your laptop or palm pilot as an ODB2 reader? Ash996

try <a href="http://www.ghg.net/dharrison/" target="_blank">http://www.ghg.net/dharrison/</a> for one that is palm or laptop based, the one I am using is a all on one unit, I do know frim using it that there are one than one kind of plug to plug into the car with and you need to get the right one. I think I am using a purple one, not sureif that is a universal color coding or not. When I go out to the garage, I will get the name and part number on the scanner I am using. you should also check out this site <a href="http://www.troublecodes.net/technical/" target="_blank">http://www.troublecodes.net/technical/</a> Jim
