The 993 and prior 911s use 12 quarts of oil with air flowing by it to cool the engine, whereas the 996 cars use water and air to cool the engine.

Had a great track day today. Since it was midweek, there were only two run groups, Red and Green. I was in Red, natch
. We each had 6 runs of 30 minutes!!! Total 3 hours!! Used up two tanks of gas, got the last cool-down lap done running on vapors. My shoulders ache, my head hurts, my eyes are bloodshot, and I seem to have this permanent grin plastered on my face
.
There was this yellow 993. It had aftermarket wheels, track tires, aerokit. It was absolutely gorgeous. Then I spotted it's plates. It said "NO H20 S". You guys can decipher it however you want, but that made the car ugly to me. Its like a black guy going to a Baptist church in a KKK outfit, or a Jewish man going to a synagogue wearing a HAMAS T-shirt. He was in my run group. There's a joker in every crowd, so I decided to be a joker as well. I didn't know if he was a better driver than I, but now I had a mission . I was going to lap him if it killed me (well, not really). Turns out, the mission wasn't too hard. I lapped him twice in 30 minutes in this 2 mile course, heh-heh. Score 2 points for the water pumpers!!
I was going to make his plate the subject for this thread, but I did not want this to be another 993 vs 996 thread. I certainly have been lapped by 993's, but a 996 lapping a 993 with this plate makes it sweet. Who knows, I may see him again, and he'll hand me my butt in a silver platter. But at least for today, I got him!!! Twice in one run!!
Way to go Palting. I don't want to get any 993 owners feeling "uneasy", 'cause I think 993's are great looking cars. But, if one is going to get a plate to say that, and want to race as well, you are a big time looser anytime you loose to a 996, That guy must be feeling pretty s#@$%y today, and I think he deserves it. Great job!
That plate IMHO screams insecurity. Why else would someone have a plate like that unless they had a chip on their shoulder? It's like he is defending his choice when there's no reason to. The 993 is an awesome car. I know because I had two of them. As you can see by my sig., I have a 996 C4S with a GT3 on the way. But, I still go out of my way to check out another person's 993 if I see one because I love PORSCHES. Can't we all just get along?
BTW, I'm glad you punked 'em!
You know Palting-if ever your here in San Francisco for a track day on any coarse ie Laguna Seca/Sears Point or Thunderhill, LMK it's on me. Nicely said- as usaual always a few bad apples out there and this guy was one of them. I'm serious Palting about the track day- as long as you pay for drinks afterwards-I'm really thirsty!!!!. Regards. Mike
Well I know the owner of that car (it is a 993 C2S and it is a gorgeous car) and I think he must have been taking it easy that day. He is a very very good driver and a very nice guy (no issues with 996 owners like myself). Also, if he had aftermarket wheels on then he was probably running with his street tires (last time I saw him he had Fiske FM/10s for the street and the C2S wheels for the track)...
I have to agree with you Palting. I don't see why anyone should have a chip on their shoulder like that. Does he not realize that some of Porsche's greatest race cars had water cooled heads? Did you get any pictures? It sounds like you have a wonderful car and I would love to see more pictures of it at the track. It also seems that you need a new plate - O2 2SLO
Palting,Nice going Dude! I never care about who I pass or who passes me at the track...BUT when someone has a plate like that they better be able to walk the walk.
Mike, thanks for the invite. That's very generous of you. All those tracks are dream tracks for me, and I definitely plan to get to them. I'll see you then!!!
Graeme, if he has no issues with 996, why the plate? He is just asking to be a target for all 996's, whether it's NA, TT, GT3, GT2, GT. Heck, even 924's, 944's, 928's, or Boxsters may take on the challenge. Even if it's a joke, I don't think it's a good joke. He may be a nice guy, most people that I meet on the track are, but it's sorta hard to get over the initial insult of the plate. Maybe if he had a smiley graemlin on the plate.
That's a good comeback plate, Dash. Maybe I'll print it on a piece of cardboard and tape it to my rear window, heh-heh-heh. OTOH, there are some very fast older 911's driven by excellent drivers out there, and I may get buried. Maybe I'll just put it on his windshield as a practical joke
.
Whoo hoo!!!
Palting,
3 hours - now just imagine how sore the guys are after their stints @ LeMans/Sebring/Daytona!!
I just can't imagine 3 hours straight - you are so lucky... and I know that I get wiped out after an hour.
Good for you!!!
J
Hi Palting,
I guess you interpreted this "NO H20" plate as some kind of attack on 996? You'd have to ask the guy to know for sure, but why should his plate have anything to do with 996's? If a VW beetle has an AIRCOOL plate does that mean the owner is making some kind of attack on water-cooled VW's? Seems like you are rather jumping to conclusions on this gentleman's intent, the world isn't really out to get you
If you enjoyed your 3 hours of track time you would probably love our RMA days (a UK trackday organiser). Usual format is open pit lane for 8 hours, no groups, great variety of cars with lots of Caterham, Lotus, Porsche, a Radical or two, the odd Aston and Ferrari... fantastic fun, by the end of the day you're wiped out but grinning like an idiot
Hi Jeeva,
I read the plate as purely descriptive, i.e. "NO H20 S" = "this car does not have water cooling and is an S model", I can't work out where the challenge or attack comes into it. If the plate read "NO HAIR" would that be an attack on people who are not bald? There must be another interpretation otherwise this thread wouldn't exist, but I honestly can't see what that other interpretation is.
Good point, John. BUT, I took it as an attack on watercooled Porsches, several on the track took it to mean the same thing, several on this board did too. I don't think anyone can be faulted for reading it as negative. OTOH, if hdid not mean it as negative, then I think he can be faulted for not realizing the negative impact. I could easily say "AIR COOL SUCKS", beacuse thats what air cools do. They suck in air to cool the engine. But I can and should be faulted for not realizing the neagitive impact. If all he wanted was to proclaim he had aircooling, then the appropriate thing would be something like "02 COOL S". Hey, that is actually a cool plate
. Maybe I'll suggest that next time I see him.
The owner is a long-term Porsche owner and has some issues with the direction Porsche has taken (hence the licence plate). I just don't think we should take it too seriously and he certainly doesn't have any issues with other Porsche owners.
He is also a PCA instructor and SCCA/PCA racer. At your event he had his SO with him and was showing her basic driving techniques (in anticipation of her first DE at BeaveRun). This was why you lapped him. You might want to try it next time he is on his own...
"I just don't think we should take it too seriously " and then you finish by saying "you might want to try it next time he is on his own". I think you are contradicting yourself.
Paulting in his very first posting in this topic had clearly mentioned " who knows, I may see him again, and he'll had my butt in a silver platter".
My personal view is that if you have a plate that says 'no h2o s', no matter how well intended it is, you tie yourself at proving it EACH AND EVERYTIME.
Way to go Palting! just wish all Porsche owner were so proud of their car and appreciate all that it has to offer

and its pretty clear what "NO H20 S" means to everyone like that on a plate BTW and wether its the owners intention or not, its insulting.

The air that is sucked into the engine is for combustion purposes (the same as in the 996 and really any other combustion-based engine). If you want to get technical, all of our 911s are air cooled. The 993 and prior 911s use 12 quarts of oil with air flowing by it to cool the engine, whereas the 996 cars use water and air to cool the engine.
In any event, I do not see how this plate is an attack on the 996. If it is, then I guess it is an attack on every other car out there that is not an oil cooled car. The oil cooled nature of the 993 and earlier 911s is part of what makes those cars unique - which is what I presume is the point of the license plate.

C'mon now. Don't make this thread turn into a name calling one. This is about a great track day, about a gorgeous (alright, I'll admit it's gorgeous) 993 that I perceive to have an challenging plate, and a satisfying result. I still think "O2COOL S" is a better plate. Lets keep it at that.
Would it have made a difference if his plate said "AIR ONLY"? I think that plate could be taken a few different ways. I saw a 993 cab at Laguna Seca last weekend that said "no h20". Yes I am a 993 guy, but I didnt take it as a blast to 996 owners. Just a preference I guess.
In the DE arena, everyone is a winner if they complete the day without damaging the car or themselves. Most of all, having a good time and learning.
Palting, sounds like you had a fun day. I cant wait for the next track day myself. So addicting.

I don't read "No H2O S" as an attack on water pumpers in any way -- why must you water guys take it as either an insult or a challenge??? If I saw a water pumper Porsche with a "NO AIR" plate I wouldn't think for a second that it was intended as an insult or a challenge.
Relax guys -- can't we all be friends?
Guys please let it go. Palting had a good time on the track and you know what if something can motivate him to be a better driver on the track- more power to him. So moderators please just close this chapter to future posts or post a nice warning(ie $1000 fine ) and enjoy your cars- I do each time on the track
. Regards. Mike
Wait! I have an idea. Why don't we take a look at the Watkins Glen Sprint race results. Lets see... 993's finished 1,3,4. Hmmm 996's finished 6th & 8th. That is pretty close, I am going from memory but the results are up so you can fine tune it. Guess it is settled
Me, I like all Porsches but 996's taste the best... just kidding!!!!!!!!!
996's were 5,7 & 8. The 7th place car was a 2001 996, silver. I think he/she had a shot at 2nd or 3rd but they were having serious brake lock up problems. It took a good driver to keep the pace the did.
