Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I checked a half dozen images on 99 996s with the top down, and yeah, I'm over-reacting and being hyper vigilant because I've never done this kind of top project before and didn't remember the gap and thought for certain I screwed up something.

Replaced the fluid, ran the top up and down a few times, added a little more fluid, and good to go.

So I managed to remove, send for rebuild, and replace the hydraulic pistons that control the top.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I managed to remove, send for rebuild, and replace the hydraulic pistons that control the top. Replaced the fluid, ran the top up and down a few times, added a little more fluid, and good to go. Or so i thought. This morning after taking the top down I noticed a small gap where the hard fabric panel closes between the rear seats and the clam-shell. Images attached. Any idea why this is doing this? There's no slack anywhere I can find to explain it, and the top closes just fine, as normal.

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

A bit of digging around and this would seem to be a calibration issue. From my limited search, this isn't quite a DIY correction without some specialized equipment. Durametric? Unless anyone has any suggestions? Edit: It was suggested to me that this is normal. I checked a half dozen images on 99 996s with the top down, and yeah, I'm over-reacting and being hyper vigilant because I've never done this kind of top project before and didn't remember the gap and thought for certain I screwed up something. I didn't do anything wrong, and this gap is perfectly normal. Whew!

POST 3Original post

Done both sets of rams on my 996.1 & 996.2. Didn't change a thing as far as the gap is concerned. On my 996.1 its the exact same as yours, a gap. Never been able to calibrate/adjust/change that gap,,, and I've tried. On my 996.2 no gap at all, tight fit. Go figure.... I'll try to get some pics up later...
