I've just sold my Boxster and bought a fully loaded 1998 996 with 24k miles, which I'm very pleased with in general except for the following :- 1) Notchy gear change especially when cold. 2) Persistent squeek from front suspension, I think the lower wishbone balljoint is shot, same thing happened to my Boxster (IS THIS COMMON ???) It's back with the dealer today to have them check it out, but I was wondreing if anybody out there has experienced similar problems, and any other common problems I should be looking out for. My gearchange is notchy when cold too - given a 5 minute warm up though, it becomes beautifully slick and precise. I've been told this doesn't really change too much with age either. Don't get the sqeaks though ! No other problems to report . . . yet !

Just thought it maybe that's the cause. The gear is notchy esp when cold but goes away in 5 minutes like GregP said. Anyway makes you not drive it so hard when cold : ). Regards. Mike
