He also advised that the roughness I feel upon launch is due to a fork and bearing that is prelubed to last the life of the clutch but tends to dry out over time, resulting in some roughness.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello, I have a 99 996 with 58,000 miles. Upon letting out the clutch in first gear only, I occasionally hear a noise best described as "heeeeee". It only occurs at launch and not all the time. I researched the board and understand that commonly clutch noise is from either the spring or at the clutch itself. I seem to hear the noise on the passenger side of the car, but it is hard to isolate when driving. I brought my car into a shop that deals primarily in P cars thinking I needed a clutch replacement. After driving the mechanic advised that the clutch was grabbing at the right point and that there still seemed to be plenty of clutch life left in his opinion. He also advised that the roughness I feel upon launch is due to a fork and bearing that is prelubed to last the life of the clutch but tends to dry out over time, resulting in some roughness. The only way to correct it would be to replace the clutch. I'm ok with the slight roughness. Is the noise I'm hearing at launch related to the same diagnosis given? Thanks

POST 2Original post

I had a squeaking/clicking noise come from the clutch when I released it - dealer replaced the boost spring to fix it. To get your whole clutch replaced is expensive (1500-2000 with labor) - so if you feel comfortable with your mechanics opinion, and can stand the noise, I'd be inclined to leave it alone. Just my two cents...

POST 3Original post

There is the return spring which is covered in a tube. This spring needs to be greased and in the tube so it has a nice resivoir of it. Have dealer do it and should be no prob. after that.
