This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Every now and then while in neutral, I have a problem shifting into 1st gear with the clutch pressed. There's a lot of resistance after a quarter inch upward movement of the shifter (stock garbage, B&Ming soon), and I haven't had the courage to force it in. My work-around for this intermittent problem has been shifting into 2nd and then into 1st. Has anyone had this same problem? What's going on and is there a fix for this?

POST 2Original post

When I had my '95 993 C2, I did the same thing to put the transmission in first. I read somewhere that this was easier on the synchros (Excellence, I think). I have not noticed any difficulty getting the 996 tranny in 1st though. Maybe I should be doing the same thing in the 996. Anyone have any opinions??????

POST 3Original post

I imagine you experience the problem when you "upshift" from neutral to first at rest. You are using the second gear synchro to stop the motion in the box. Even reaching for second without fully engaging it will accomplish this. Far better than grinding your first gear, but this increases the wear on the second gear synchro a little. Any gear will do for this, I would suggest a jog towards sixth if you are finicky about mechanical wear. Or you could just stop in second, and go to first from there. Alfas used to have one-way synchromesh into first, if you practice that move for a while I can tell you it takes twenty years to unlearn (if you care to). Similar to the "I had a turbo" thing where you can't turn any motor off without letting it idle for 30 seconds...

POST 4Original post

I agree and by the way what temp is this occuring at? cold? Very normal and it's the tranny fluid if so.
