The guy I got it from said it was a PSE, but there have turned out to be a lot of things he said that weren't quite accurate (like, "yes I replaced the clutch 5k miles ago" when he meant to say "yes, the hydrolic line for the clutch was replaced 5k miles ago, but the actual clutch needs to be done soon").

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I bought my car a month ago and it certainly has an exhaust system - no doubt about it. Anyway, when I took it to the dealer the guys said "Whoa, this things got an EXHAUST on it" - like it was different than normal. In listening to the few other 996s I've seen on the street, none sounds like mine. Is there a way for me to get under the car and see exactly what kind of exhaust I have? Also, I saw someone post here about a red air(?) tube and carbon fibre plug in the engine compartment. I have both of these - STUPID question...if these aren't stock, what are they? Thanks all...

POST 2Original post

Sounds like a FabSpeed Airbox... http://www.fabspeed.com/996.html

POST 3Original post

Look at the mufflers, if they are in fact PSE they will have some sort of extra bypass tube, be it a smaller tube betweeen the inflow and outflow or a larger tube added to the outflow. They are also of stamped steel construction just like the standard mufflers. The PSE also has what I call expansion bellows on the inflow tube.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks. The airbox is definitely from Fabspeed, and it apprears that the exhaust may be too. I saw the mufflers on the Fabspeed website, and outside of the mirror finish, they look like what I remember seeing under my car last night. Any chance anybody knows whether the Fabspeed exhausts came in a standard stainless steel (no "mirrored" look) finish? The mufflers I have are a smooth shape, no indentations or "bubbling" (like a beef roast with strings tied tightly around the meat - odd analogy, I know). Any opinions out there?

POST 5Original post

Sounds like you have an aftermarket muffler. There should be a name on it somewhere.

POST 6Original post

Roast Beef with strings? That very funny (and accurate). Maybe they are Fabspeed but painted or roughed up. Take a picture and post.

POST 7Original post

The seller of the car should have mentioned any modifications he made to the car. If he didn't I would be suspicious.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

A) I will try to take a pic tonight and post - that's probably the easiest instead of talking about car parts in terms more suited for a potroast. B)Keyvan - Unfortunately, my judge of character on the seller wasn't as good as I thought - he's turning out to be less knowledgable than I originally thought. I don't think there was any ill intent on his part, I just don't think he really knew what he was talking about - and obviously, its partially my fault for not knowing any better.

POST 9Original post

Just look under the car at the mufflers with a flashlight you should either see a porsche part number or the name of the manufacturer somewhere on them I would imagine.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yep, fabspeed mufflers it is. They needed to be cleaned off before I could see the name - thanks guys.

POST 11Original post

Most people seem to like the Fabspeed airbox and mufflers, how do you like them on your car?

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, I haven't known anything else, so I can't give a side by side comparison. I do love the sound though - great feeling to rev the engine and have that deep growl come through. Like most others have said, it is tame enough to drive long distances when you're up to speed and just cruising, but loud and proud when coming up through the gears. Nothing too obnoxious - just makes it feel more like a sports car.

POST 13Original post

Everytime I listen to my Fabspeed "growl" at about 3500 revs it raises the hairs on my back. Even at idle, it sounds sporty. A friend has a PSE fitted on his 02 C4 coupe and we both agree the Fabspeed has a much richer and sportier sound. But if you fit the Maxflow exhaust, I recommend you also fit the Fabspeed cold airbox and BMC F1 airfilter. 0-bitch in less than 5 secs and a kickass punchy roar to boot. Cheers, Scoucer
