Considering that most 996s have been purchased used for between $15-30 k US its not very far to go before you double purchase price.

Hi,
I am submitting for your feedback this first mockup of 996 MK1 LED Headlights before investing too much time in the design and fabrication of such a new model.
I am not familiar with the 996 market so I would like to better understand the potential for such a product.
Any feedback is appreciated.
Thanks,
Francois
p.s. I know the redering quality and precision is not great so please concentrate your feedback on the overall design and your assessment of the potential interest.
Selfishly, I would focus on the 996.2 as there is only 1 aftermarket option available. There are many different options for the 996.1 due to congruency with Boxster headlights. As a buyer, I would prefer standard bulbs, not proprietary LED's. I can put LED bulbs in but I won't have the headache of proprietary LED's blowing. Same for the fog light. It would be interesting so see an option with no lights at all and relocate the signal/running lights below.
I also like the first one but switch the amber marker light to the inside like the original
also I would be interested in this if it ever gets made
I think 996.1 / is a bigger market because of aging components
I would love to see a quality alternative to OEM that retains the original appearance as closely as possible. Lithtronic headlight assemblies are north of $2,900 each.
Just my opinion but as the 996.1 cars become more valuable in the marketplace especially the early amber cars you might be designing a part whos time has passed as originality becomes more and more desirable as time goes by. That is why I keep a mint set on my shelf😀

If you should go for a design that has a fog and/or DRL at the same level as the indicator, then I recommend putting the indicator to the outside, I.e. away from the car's centerline.
For me the ideal solution would be something that looks absolutely identical to the original Litronic HID lights, but with modern LED functionality. The cars look best with original equipment. Every aftermarket light option makes the car look hacky and cheap IMO. So the only reason to replace is to get rid of yellowed plastic and/or have better nighttime visibility. Not to change the appearance if the car and make it look modified.
You bring up an excellent point. The 996 is sorely in need of replacement headlamp lenses. As far as I know, this product has never existed and I think there is a good business opportunity for someone to command this portion of the 996 aftermarket.
Not true...there were replacement lenses available for the 996.2. I have one - brand new. By the time I found the one, the other side was no longer available. I thought I would find one on ebay/marketplace. Never have I seen one for sale!
There are lenses for 996.1
996 GT3 R / Cup Headlight Cover 1998-2001 - Clear - Left
I bought the last single lens from this vendor, must have been 2019 or 2020.
That is not the lens but the cover, as it is properly listed by FVD.
The lens sits directly in front of the halogen bulb and it develops 2 yellow/brown burn spots. Hence demand for replacement lenses.
Okay, we need both then! Lens for halogen (US and RoW, perhaps RHD too?) and covers.
Don't think any manufacturer will go through the cost and effort to certify them with DOT and similar in order to get them legal for use on public roads, however.
This is also my concern, I would rather just have a flat piece of black plastic that keeps the headlight flat. I agree with others about using standard bulbs for the low/high beams as proprietary LEDs would keep me from buying.
I think the 996.1 segment will yield you more sales as the Boxster crowd would probably jump on these as well.
I'd just want to be sure the aero wasn't negatively affected at all. Especially at speed - make sure the new air turbulence doesn't cause the front end to get unsettled or anything.
Unless you are racing or tracking the car will you experience (unlikely even then probably) feel any impact of the "areo" from these vents. I think the worse case would be the tube directing the air to the brakes falling off. 98% of these sold will go on street cars that will not drive over 100 mph on any given day. I like the concept and bet these would sell fairly well.

I want better lights Ill keep my old ones.
Thats like saving your girl friend for her next boy friend. These cars will never be super valuable so why not use it as it was intended for. Just saying!
I like what you've designed for the 996.1 and I like the air intake style for the 996 I also see in the thread. I think I prefer the bottom light to follow the horizontal line of the front hood and fender, whereas your design introduces a curve. I do like that your design emphasizes a round headlight.
I think I would be really more interested in a DRL/Driving or Fog light module that would integrate seamlessly either into the lower front grille center section or into the R and L side lower front grill areas. Not blocking too much air to the radiators, but providing some very high power driving or fog lights along with a DRL. I am more interested in this than in alternative headlights. I do think you are creating a very interesting option! Thank you.
Yeah I find it funny that people still deny the appeal of the 996 EVEN HERE!!!
the prices of the 996 is a steady climb upwards and still rising
I applaud the headlights and I will probably be a customer
996 forever 😎
"steady climb upwards and still rising"....with all due respect, what world are you living in? I hate to say but you can find 996's for less then $12k now days.......if you look of KBB or others they have very low values. I understand that owning one you want to make yourself think they are an appreciating asset but on the contrary......
Whats super valuable? Double purchase price? Triple purchase price? More? Considering that most 996s have been purchased used for between $15-30 k US its not very far to go before you double purchase price. Certainly not what I would consider a quality investment but any time you can drive a car for several years and get back what you paid plus perhaps a little extra youre doing pretty well. As for having a pristine pair of headlights on the shelf, he can always sell them too - theres a fairly robust Porsche parts marketespecially since the fried eggs seem to have gained a cult following 😃
Kbb is too dealer based classic.com lists sold and unsold car so you can see prices at a point
here is the last year in sales if you see their 5year chart you see it’s all been uphill
Famous quote on price versus value from Warren Buffet.
"Price is what you pay; value is what you get."
The translation is...
Price is the monetary amount paid, while value is the actual worth or utility received.
You get alot of value for the current prices of a 996.
To me all lights that change the look of the car look the same; cheap and wrong. If looking at a car to buy, aftermarket lights make me wonder what other stuff has been tampered with in the car, and to what quality level, and whether it's reversible. Kind of like when you see an aftermarket stereo, you know the wiring harness has probably been hacked behind repair. That's why I said earlier in this thread, to me what would be attractive is modern light output with original equipment looks. But that's just me, I know plenty of people like to modify and change the looks.
Thank you for your reply. I understand that these products are made for Porsche enthusiasts who enjoy personalizing their cars. Youre absolutely entitled to your opinion, but I want to reassure you that I am not producing low‑quality or incorrect parts. This is exactly why I welcome all suggestions and take them seriously.
I love the 4th version, not a big fan of the vgt or body color. That loses the identity of the 996. I'm hoping that you'll offer plug and play connectors; modifying harnesses has always kept me away from aftermarket.
Do you have a timeline?
We are going to use the standard Porsche connector and we are currently making prototypes. The first release should be within few weeks and we will post pictures on this forrum.
Thanks for your feedback.
I used to race motocross. The first thing I did when I bought my last bike was to pull of the original gas tank and slap on a beater. I rode the hell out of that bike until I decided to quit while my body was in one piece. Sold that bike the first guy who looked at it.
My view is to install the new lights, double box the $7K-to-replace originals and safely stow them in the garage. I don't have any intention to sell the 996, but options will be available at sale time.
There's something to be said about your strategy. OE parts will only get more expensive with time. Lights are so easy to remove, I have thought of 2 different sets as well for my 996.2. One to shine up real pretty and keep in storage and one to drive around with.
Here is another option for the 996.1. Kudos to the OP.
Might be hard to answer without having a rough idea on volume / sales potential, but is there a price range you expect to be within across the variants shown?
It is still too early to establish the price but out goal is to offer affordable alternatives for your car. Once the prototyping is completed we will confirm options and pricing.
I could not agree more on kudos to the OP to working on a viable alternative. I will never buy eBay junk-lights. Today I've got 8 mil PPF on my headlights hoping like hell that's going to withstand a rock impact on my dear 25 year old plastic. The OP's current version looks good and with FSI's product reputation we finally have an option. I hope I can bolt up my Adrian upgrade.
The paint peeled off of my transport rails, so I had them repainted. The local body shop did a
flawless
job color matching so painting will be a snap. And the shop owner's dad had a 996 so he has fond memories of their time together so my car gets special attention.
very interested in this, as I've been wanting a modern-ish design, but still retaining the oem look. Need to see the real world version installed to see.
These look great. Scrolling through I had similar feedback to others until post 47 thats really what I had in mind, those look slick. I have an early car thats missing front ambers, so I would be interested in amber accents. Would these be black or color match as well? For my tastes Im not a fan of the mascara look, and Ive got a silver car so in black they would stick out like a sore thumb! That is very subjective feedback though, like colored wheels and chrome lips etc. I applaud the willingness to design openness to feedback.
The 996 inch s a funny interloper between old air cooled and modern assembly and comfort. The design language is similarly laid back and classically curved with modern technicality in materials and fitment. I think the lights at post 47 capture that.
Like others I would appreciate better lights to use that enhance the car function and make it MORE without too much of a statement. Ill box the OE ones just like Ill box the useless radio and carry on happily with PCCM or equivalent.
It may be unconventional, but were trying out some option ideas. Curious what you think.
Sorry, I didnt really spend much time on the rendering.

Could you elaborate on the air duct version? Is the front lens flat and appearance of the duct created by the molding under it or is it an actual vent?
Will there be a fog light mount to retain them?
Will it be possible to retain the halogen/projector lights for those of us who did Adrians upgrade? I am guessing the answer is no since there is only one bulb.
Given the potential change to the light bulbs will this come with its own wiring harness? What I like about Adrians upgrade the simple bolt up replacement. If we plug into an upgraded wiring harness I keep the backward compatibility with OEM, which I feel is important.
In no surprise, my early vote is classic with the disclaimer that I reserve the right to think like my wife during a home remodel project.
Classic edition top right... would buy in a heartbeat
all the ones with the 4 LED spots look too modern for the 996.1
Air duct seems to spoil the simplicity of the round lights and distracts.
Looking.forwars to see where this lands!
This is an actual vent that can be connected to the wheel well or redirecting the air flow down to the radiators.
These headlights will use the standard Porsche 996 connectors, no modification to the harness.
Thanks for your feedback.
I was at the gas station filling up my little 996 and glad it wasn't the truck.
I was looking at the headlights and thinking of this upgrade when I saw my car’s headlight washers. Even though they do work, I do not want headlight washers on the new light and intend to plug the line.
Just to keep you posted, we are very close to the final fitting tests and release. The goal is to release it within 4-8 weeks.
I am still open to suggestions and comments.
Thanks for you great participation.
My sentiment exactly. A LED or HID retrofit in an existing OEM housing will always be the most attractive thing to me.
I would be happier if someone released OEM quality lens cover replacements for both 996.1 and 2 because they don't exist right now.
We are still in the process of evaluating the labor and material involve in the production of these headlights. Our goal is to release it within 6-8 weeks.
Im very ready to buy! Assuming they are reasonable and not astronomical, send me a DM! This will make a huge difference in my front end. If these can rehab the world's roughest 996.1, what a charitable cause!
Is there an option where the edges are color matched to the car? Would love to see that. And also, don't know if someone has asked, would this work in Litronics equipped cars?
The headlight trim rims can be satin black or on primer to be color matched to the car, some pictures will follow soon.
They can replace the Litronic headlights.
If you are interested you can enter your name on our waitlist at flat6-illumination.com
Okay, that looks great!
Seems like a viable alternative to the expensive Porsche oe headlights. Especially to replace the burnt halogens that are so common.
How exciting! Will I be able to order the non-air duct version from the start? Are you not longer offering the silver shroud?
If thats the case, chrome, non-duct and amber turn signal for me!
I registered for the wait list, but I'm not 100% confident that my choices will match up with the look I'd like. (tbh, this is so cool I will probably mess with it for an hour or two).
Your website has a grid of headlights with some of them having a description of the options that particular image represents, but not all of them. If each picture reflected the options description I could use AI to merge the headlight image onto my car. E.g., I'm not sure I'd like the primer version for the rim trim or satin black? It would be helpful for you to render the trims in different colors so AI/Photoshop can let us fiddle with satin black/chrome/primer options.
Based on my previous experiences this shouldn't be a nightmare request - I'm hoping it won't be hard.
Small criticism but I think important On your website, in several of the illustrations of the different models of headlights the proportions of the units are all wrong (some are stretched & some are squeezed, but it gives a very amateurish presentation) - hopefully this will be fixed before you start selling the units.
* Im sure this is a web coding issue and probably not your main concern at this time, but you should get your web person on it asap because its been this way for a while and should be fixed.
I am counting down the days until my set arrives. A prior upgrade of my headlights went smoothly until I was out past dark and found they were pointing max down. The 20' in front of the car was beautifully illuminated and it was impossible to see more than 25' ahead. I had to follow vehicles home or face driving at 25 mph.
It would be much appreciated to give some sort of aim point adjustment guidelines. I.e., "at 5' in front the low beam should be 32" high" to lessen the trial and error do loop. Or cite the established procedure that I am not aware exists.
Just wondering if anyone received their set yet. I ordered mine on May 19. At that time, estimated shipping was near the end of June.
Can anyone speak on fit/finish?
QUOTE=996.x;20639896]I'm sure you received the same e-mail from Francois today, but they are shipping in the next two weeks.
I sent a message to the webmaster to request some info on this and specifically if it's related to the legitimacy of the product. I asked for an update from Francois last week and he got back to me right away, which is un-scam-like. He said tracking numbers would go out this week. It's been crickets on a tracking number.
Is any of this stuff usable anyway, even if it's not a scam and people do end up receiving physical product? I can't imagine passing a legitimate state inspection with these on your car since these are not DOT-approved, right? I hope nobody loses a bunch of money on this.
I DM'd the site admins about the ban of FlatSixi and got crickets - I don't want to poke the bears and get banned. I received an immediate response to my delivery question today (Sunday). I'll post my unboxing when it happens.
FWIW, my lights have the brake airducts like the units Porsche Austin is showing. I've added black screens to my front bug/rock scoops and think the air duct version will integrate with the new front end look.
If Porsche sold replacement headlights for a reasonable price I wouldn't be departing from original. But $7+K for two is not reasonable.
The account was closed because this post was considered advertizing without being sponsor that is quite expensive by the way.
Sorry for the confusion and the inconvenience related to this situation.
You can still find all information related to this project on the website listed previously.
I have a tracking number, and the package status says it has cleared customs from Canada. DHL says the ETA is August 20th, but I suspect it will arrive prior to then. I will do an unboxing with before/after pictures.
To update, I received my headlights. Before I did, Francois sent me a message that I would have to return them because of a fitment issue with the brackets.
The lenses were so pretty , I did not want to send them back. I was on my way out of town, so I snapped some pics, mostly for him. But I did take note there were some issues. The plastic appeared nore fragile than I would have liked and some of the sealant seemed hasitly applied. I raised my concerns to Francois who gave me the option of a refund or replacement. I opted for the refund and committed to buy another set when he gets the materials figured out.
I did not want to roast Francois or his company; I love the fact that he's making these to support our cars. I really hope he works these kinks out.

Its a real bummer they showed up like that. Francois did mention in our most recent communication that they had some delays due to manufacturing. Being yours were the first to ship that we know of it may have slipped through.
they do look very nice
im still excited to receive mine soon.
Thanks for the feedback. These headlights were part of our first production batch, and I recognize that we shipped them too early given the issues you encountered. Im truly sorry for the inconvenience.
The good news is that all of these problems have now been addressed, and we are currently shipping a new batch with much better results. We know there may still be bumps along the way, but were fully committed to resolving any situation to our clients satisfaction.
Thanks for your understanding.
Sneak preview of the unboxing post I'll put up this weekend. The short version is the fit is perfect. I will also have pictures of the screen to radiators I installed for $13. The integration those screens with the air duct screen looks clean/complimentary to my eye. I'm off to buy a donor car for the conversion of Tip to manual.
I posted in the 986 thread, and similar to macool68, I had some quality issues. I've returned them to Francois and look forward to getting the revised version.
Thanks to our first customers for their understanding as we worked through the issues that can arise at the early stage of a new development.
All concerns have been carefully reviewed and resolved, and the updated parts have now been shipped.
We remain fully open to any additional comments or concerns. Thank you.
Yes we ship to US and based on some verifications the new tariffs should not apply but we did not have any customer's feedback yet. We never know when it crosses the border how it is going to be processed exactly.
