One of the posts indicated that for MY 2002, Porsche changed the standard exhaust.

I would recommend the Sport exhaust that comes from the factory.

You can shop around for price - I think they run about $500/set from your dealer for the "plain" 4" chrome ovals.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Sounds better, but still getting that "fart" in first gear when launching.
2001 C4 996. Factory sound i can't even hear.
i want something that is not too loud, but better than factory sound (a little deeper).
Has anyone replaced exhaust? yes/no/recommend
how much is involoved (expensewise) & who makes a good exhaust. i am new to porsch community & don't know jack shet about any places that work on the car except the dealer.
Should i stay away from this mod? problems?
also, i kind of like the oval tip that the turbos have, can the new exhuast come with that look?
any help will be appreciated.
I love the Porsche Sport Exhaust!! Runs about $1200 to $1500, and should take about 2 hours for the dealer to install.. without electronics.. check ebay I saw a used one last week
Take your cats off and install an IMEC downpipe.
Last week, wilber on this board installed one on a new C4S and now the car sounds like a Ferrari 355.
Another Boxster S guy put one on and it also sounds sweeeeeet.
Cheaper than an exhaust and gets you 10hp too!
I have a 2001 996 c4 with aero kit. I put on GHL stainless steel exhaust and headers. Nice throaty rumble at idle and growl above. Not too loud either.
Enjoy,
Mike
I'm still a Fabspeed guy. Had them on 4 different Pcars and really like them. You can install yourself they're so easy. They cost less and weigh less than the PSE.
Lots of choices here , expect a dramatic improvement in sound and possibly a small HP gain.
1. PSE probably the best choice, as it is plenty loud and still OEM. There are two versions based on model year, though it may or may not matter which is used.
2. Fabspeed, great quality and sound, can't beat the price. Best bang for the buck solution.
3. Ruf exhaust has a very unique sound, top quality as you would expect. But very pricey, and getting worse with the exchange rates.
There are others, but these are what I have heard.
I have the PSE and it is plenty loud. As for tips, I believe all of the stock tips fit the PSE just bolt/solder them on. You can see all that are available (including the Turbo tips you referenced) on the porsche.com website under the 911 "tequipment" section. You can shop around for price - I think they run about $500/set from your dealer for the "plain" 4" chrome ovals.
hi. i read your post about the PSE. i guess there are 2 exhausts out there. doesn't porsche put PSE on all their cars? so the one i have is what? just standard.
i am confused. i thought porsche only makes 1 exhaust. why do they have the PSE for & who uses that (which model/year).
does the pse fit my 01 c4 with aero 996?
any help will be nice.
Bruce.
Hey Yellowbmr, they offer a standard exhaust as well as a PSE (Porsche Sport Exhaust). There is a difference between model year 98-01 and MY02 - present. I personally have the fabspeed exhaust and love it. There is opne called the Mille Miglia you can get it at upon3racing.com or by design, although not to many people on this board seem to have it. Either way the exhaust upgrade be it Gemballa, Techart, GHL, Fabspeed, RUF, Mille Miglia or the PSE, will be the best upgrade/mod you will do on your car....
To answer your 2nd question, your car likely came with the "standard" exhaust. Nothing wrong with it, just not as loud as most of us would like. As an "option" Posche offers a factory upgraded exhaust system that makes the car sound like it should (and supposedly adds 10+ hp) - hmmm, seems like yet another way Porsche can get us back into the shop. Regardless of the marketing technique, the sport exhaust (PSE) sounds much better and will probably make you happier with your car. Just make sure the shop orders the correct PSE for your car's year - as others have said, there are two versions, each based on the year of your car.
One of the posts indicated that for MY 2002, Porsche changed the standard exhaust. What was the change and how would you compare the 2002 standard exhaust to the PSE?

yellowmbr -
I have a 99 c4Own a 99 c4 and trying to make it a little more fun to drive. Started with the exhaust. Went down to the local Dealer (Champion Porsche) and they had Tubi and their own brand "Champion Motorsport". Seeing as these guys have a racing division, I opted for the Champion. Short story, I was not impressed. Almost too loud and at low rpm, sounded like a souped up Toyota - at least in my eyes, not the sound that should be coming from an 70k plus car. Anyway, they were great and offered to swap for the Tubi. Sounds better, but still getting that "fart" in first gear when launching.
Next stop in the money buring process...I went to FVD in Pompano (great tip MJSPEED - thanks!), and it turns out the FVD actually makes the Champion exhaust. For those that want a real racy sound, FVD/Champion is the way to go. It is loud. In any event, I explained my problem to FVD which was that at low rpm, like when taking off in first, the backpressure made the exhaust note sound lame (to me). The Tubi is great when smoothed out but I am determined to lose that "fart" in 1st gear. FVD recommended that I go for the FVD headers and new intake set up - about a $1500 deal. Not only would i get the minimal HP (about 15), but I would add 15lbs of torque. FVD claims this will solve the problem. I will let you know.
The previous PSE has 4/5" bypass tubes and only fits on 3.4L cars. The new PSE has 2" bypass tubes and fits on both 3.4L and 3.6L 996s.

Hey guys,
I called the dealer Beverly Hills Porsche and the service writer said it was 1000 dollars labor alonefor PSE install, not including parts. Said it would take the whole day to complete. A far cry from what I have heard here. I asked him for a price on the parts for the pse and he said he will get back to me? Sound crazy, I think so. Can you guys maybe suggest someone else to buy the parts from and do the install? Any help is great Thanks,
Steve
He's talking about adding the electronics. Most of us just bolt them on, which dealers are charging about two hours for.
Look on eBay for a PSE, I got mine new for $960.00.
Did I understand Rob in WA's post correctly, is the PSE a DIY "bolt on"? I'm really not interested in the electronics. I would just want the system open and louder.
If the PSE is not a DIY, how about the Fabspeed?
Rob: I think you outbid me for those, very good deal. At least they went to another Ocean Blue Rennlist member.
Panerai: If you want the PSE full installation, the system can be installed to a switch in the dash that operates a flap, to route the exhaust either through the muffler or bypass (open).
Alternatively, the muffler can automatically go quiet from about 30-40mph (someone will remember and post exactly) and open the rest of the time. This was the original design, and was to satisfy the noise regs in some country or other, I think the Swiss.
This is expensive because the bulk of the interior comes out to route the electronics to the dash, about 7 hours of labor.
The installation without any electronics defaults to bypass, or open all the time. One hour labor per side according to Porsche spec. This would also be the DIY install, no big deal.
This system is not intended to increase power, certainly not meaningfully, just sound.

I don't doubt this but I've heard people say you have to order the "correct" PSE for your engine 3.4 vs 3.6
So I guess the question is... which sport exhaust would sound better on a 3.4L 996... the new one or the old one... ?
cheers
