Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am trying to read this engine number on my vehicle. It is a 1999 (1/98 build ...620065) however the engine was replaced under warranty due to the oil in the water thing happening at 20k miles or so. I can read a few things but thought I would get some feedback and go with the majority opinion. Thanks in advance

POST 2Original post

Are you having trouble reading the number or something else? If you are trying to read it, try spraying some wd-40 on it and wiping it off.

POST 3Original post

Not the greatest picture but here's what I get: M96/0166X16403 If I have my M96 decoder ring adjusted correctly: M96/01 = first generation 3.4L 5-chain engine 6 = 6 cylinders 6 = non-turbo? unsure of this one X = 1999 build date 16403 = engine serial number

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
