I learned my lesson along time ago not to drive my manual 996 with dress shoes, boots, running shoes, and anything else with alot if rubber and leather that takes up alot of space between the pedals as well as eliminates any feeling as to where your feet actually are.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 996 tt, 2001. Yesterday I was driving, had come to a stop at a stoplight, when the engine revved and powered the car forward into the car in front of me and then it into the car in front of it. I was standing on the break to no avail. Finally threw the car into park to stop it and it broke the revving. It is an automatic. Towed to my shop and they can't find any issues. Ran diagnostics and nothing came up. Suggesting to do body work now and then can look at transmission in more detail/ other possible issues. But writing to see if anyone has any knowledge of this. It was scary and crying at my car damaged as well as the other people involved. Fortunately no injuries or anything as it was low speed, more like a tractor plowing into the cars ahead. But without knowing what happened I will not feel comfortable driving it again. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

POST 2Original post

I guess I'll be that guy. Google 'unintended acceleration'.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It is fine. And I get it, hit wrong pedal. While I understand, I had stopped. Never moved my foot. And the way the engine revved I would have shot forward. This was more like a slow crawl. I can't say 100% in the moment my foot didn't slip, but I am pretty confident it did not. And the car had stopped, for about 10 seconds, normal idol, when the engine suddenly revved way high. and slowly powered forward. If it was just hitting gas instead it would not have been slow. Just looking for any possible options. Have read of issues with clutch pad or break vacuum lines leaking that could cause revving. Not sure if applies to this model.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The other thing is I stood on the brake. The engine didn't rev higher, which if it had been gas pedal I would have had it floored. But again, I can't say for sure. Just trying to make sure car is safe.

This! Toyota found that people were stacking plastic mats on carpet mats.

POST 7Original post

Thing is, brakes are more powerful than the engine, Thats physics of it. jmo

POST 8Original post

I'm afraid you could not have been standing on the brake pedal in this scenario, as the brakes are always more powerful than the engine. Witness the principle of power braking, If the brakes are too strong for a pro-stock drag racer, they certainly are too strong for a 996tt.

POST 9Original post

Unfortunately, this is similar to the Audi issue over 35 years ago. The brakes are stronger than the engine if they are working properly. Best to take it into the shop and have them look over the brakes and solve for sudden acceleration. Sounds like you have an automatic. I learned my lesson along time ago not to drive my manual 996 with dress shoes, boots, running shoes, and anything else with alot if rubber and leather that takes up alot of space between the pedals as well as eliminates any feeling as to where your feet actually are. Caused too many problems and a few near misses. Big pucker factor. Sorry about your dilemma. Glad nobody was hurt.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok. I was pressing brakes and/or accelerator and did not let off until the car stopped, I turned it off, and got out. The revving stopped when I put it in park, but my foot was still pressing down. I would love it to be driver error, because then it would just be me having screwed up. But this felt different. I was mostly seeing if any known issues. After body work I am getting it back to my mechanics for a full check.

POST 11Original post

I believe you. I hope the problem will be fully resolved soon!

POST 12Original post

Honest self assessment. I like that. Thank you. I don't have anything that would explain how the engine was able to overpower the brakes from a full stop. Hopefully a thorough mechanical checkup will find it.

POST 13Original post

I think that car has electronic pedal, not cable. Something to think about.

POST 14Original post

When the shifter is in P or N the ecu rev limits the engine to a pretty low value, maybe 3500 RPM. When the ecu sees the brake applied it also does some rev limiting. I can't remember how much.

POST 15Original post

There is a lot of safety and redundancy built into all cars...Thats why the dual Pots on the E-gas pedal and dual Pots on the E-TB and overrides on the Cruise Control ect.. Having worked in a Dealership since 1974 and have investigated dozens of complaints of " it just accellerated by itself" I haven't found one Legit case of it happening....The number 1 and number 2 cause of "Legit Accidents" ..are "Fat Foot" and "Floor Mats" ...... I have had both the Fat Footg, and Floor Mat issues cause me more than one close call and one busted front spoiler ( the busted front Spoiler was over 40 years ago...lol)
