Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I know the plugs are new and were replaced after the borescope, but otherwise have no ages so I'll add it all to the list.
Leading evidence: 'Replace i know the plugs are new' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check cam deviations' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Replaced my trans mount with the CTA tool and an OEM mount, turns out I was missing the little urethane pads too.

Replaced the transmission mount and the clunk is gone.

Got a good aggressive drive in and finally remembered to check cam deviations when hot.

If youre planning to pull your cluster, plan to replace the connectors.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a simple 220v Stick-Welder that has fixed a lot of things at a very low cost.
Happy to finally be a Porsche owner in SW PA, my neighbor growing up had a 986 Boxster so for me the 996's headlights feel right. After building a small shop (installing a lift this year) this winter and selling my fishing boat it was time to go on the hunt. I knew I wanted a manual coupe and I want to fix things so I was mainly looking for a rust free example with a clean title. I found this 2004 Carrera locally for $25k with 54k miles, it shows fairly well, had the IMS retrofit done in 2017 (planning to go to the solution shortly) and the borescope looked excellent. The dealer also included a replacement steering column stalk assembly. I left a fair amount of budget to fix things early so what it needs:
Brakes
Starter
Needs probably isn't the right word, but updating the IMS
Fluids
Fix the active spoiler
Refinish the wheels
Shocks and springs, all the bushings look shockingly good
Some interior plastics
Whatever else I find along the way
Including a pic of my daily G63 too
Congrats! You will have a blast with it.
Consider the following as well...
1. Replacing the water pump
2. Upgrading the AOS to the UAOS
3. Check age/condition of fuel injectors, maf, ignition coils, plugs and oil pressure sender. Always helps to have fresh ones after 20 years.
Enjoy the winding roads of western PA!
Thank you it was a tank for this year's ski season, pretty happy with the nitto G3s. The cruse control stalk was broken and hanging by the wires, but the dealer I bought it from had a new set of stalks they threw in. Saved me some dollars for sure.
Good call on the additional items! I know the plugs are new and were replaced after the borescope, but otherwise have no ages so I'll add it all to the list.
Search for y-cable for details. It supplies +12V from the battery, via the extra + post in the engine bay and wire corrosion increases its resistance when hot, thus less voltage reaches the starter hence it turning slowly
The exhaust is going to be an ebay special, mufflers got delivered, just waiting on one more muffler bracket to be delivered.
Hopefully my maxjax is getting delivered early next week to and then this will all start going together quickly.
I have a Maxjax, love it. I did a tons of research on installing it with dimensions, I really just over thought it. But all of my notes and dimensions are here:
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...xjax-lift.html
I have put so many different cars on it, the 129" spacing is perfect IMO.
Honestly I was looking at the 105 - 135" range they recommend. I can either keep the posts narrower and be able to shimmy between the post and wall if needed or make them wider and walk between the car and post when it's lowered.
Entering the next phase of car guy life, got the maxjax installed. I need to reroute my hoses to go straight up, but that's not a big deal.
Ended up going with a 130" width after laying everything out.
Knocked out the brakes today, still plenty of things on the list to go. Took advantage of the spring weather this weekend to get a gutter hung and walkway put in between the house and shop too.
Need to rerun this after a much harder drive, but amid my spoiler woes this is some nice news. Having a shop do the LN Engineering solution next month.
Nah, looks like one of the generic eBay short shifters.

Mine came with one of those as well. It's meh.

A quick bath so I could get a much better idea of my paint issues. I'm going to need some touch up paint for sure and I need to decide what I want to do with the front bumper....an aero kit retrofit may be in the future.
I have had good success with Automotive Touch Up for paint, primer and clearcoat for various projects such as painting center console, emergency brake, etc. My indy is a Porsche raceshop and they also have a guy that paints race cars. So if I have a project I just hand him the Automotive Touchup paint, primer and clearcoat and they spray whatever I need sprayed. Color match for seal grey was dead on.

Also had good success with Dr. Colorchip for paint chips.

If you want factory paint your local Porsche dealer can get it for you as well.
Nice I hadn't heard of either of these! The biggest spot is the edge of the drivers door so I don't have any crazy chips that are visible. The front bumper has some spidering starting that is hard to see unless you catch the light right. Paint may be a fun winter project.
Back at it on a Friday, OEM motor mounts. The car shifts much better now and is noticeably less vibrate-y. Not a cheap part anymore, but worth it IMO. Finally pulled the air filter out too and goodness was it gross.
After I replaced the rear engine mounts, the loud clunk that would occur when downshifting or when suddenly accelerating did not go away. Replaced the transmission mount and the clunk is gone. The trans mount bushings were garbage. I felt that replacing the entire trans mount would be more cost effective than pressing the bushings out and in. If you have a ten ton press, then you could replace them.
I went with
SKU9X6CLPLUGS from suncoast. The reviews made it sound like they wouldn't work out of the box with my 996.2, but mine appear to fit fine and locked in. I'll update here if something starts going wrong I guess.
Replaced my trans mount with the CTA tool and an OEM mount, turns out I was missing the little urethane pads too. Just got a quick test drive in last night, but between the new engine mounts and trans mount shifting feels much improved. I will need to address the ebay shifter. And I destroyed my cheapo amazon multi-position creeper so I guess I'm back on the hunt for a good mid height lift creeper.
Why not just weld it to fix it? Simple. I have a simple 220v Stick-Welder that has fixed a lot of things at a very low cost. Perhaps look in "Nickel-Ads" or FBook ads for one, usually cheap, under $100.
YMMV
I'd probably have to also set up a new pin on the other side. It's an option, but I'm not sure how well the frame will weld. On the other hand I think I'm still within the return window.
Got a good aggressive drive in and finally remembered to check cam deviations when hot. Looks like I'm good to go for this coming weekend. Dropping the car off on my way to northern Michigan at Steinel's for my LN engineering IMS solution.
Got the car back from Steinels today and shes running great, practically a Prius. Happy to have the IMS solution done, now I just need to sort out the O2 sensor check engine light haha
Was poking around underneath today and man my AC lines are crunched. Steinels mentioned the same thing, but I didnt realize how rough it was. This feels like a problem if my AC craps out. Got a pretty peak scion magnet from rock auto with my new O2 sensors though.
Ive just been enjoying the car this summer and am planning a refresh of the suspension this winter. I think my battery is finally trying to exit the conversation, but Id rather buy a fresh one in the spring.
