My question to the forum is: should I run away from this car?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am new to the forum and look forward to contributing more once I purchase my 1st Porsche 911 996!! Ive been looking for a few months now and had a couple of potentials that didnt pan out. A friend of mine in TX mentioned a potential seller who has not listed his car yet. I plan on using this as my weekend, fun car. With a potential of specing it for track (but this is another conversation in itself..not sure what can be done with Cabriolet).
The car:
'02 Porsche 911 996 Carrera 4 Cabriolet 2D..All wheel drive. Black on black.
'02 Porsche 911 GT2 body kit -rear bumper, front bumper and side skirts. Asanti wheels.
Seller has the stock wheels, hard top, & a wing
 roughly 69,200 miles
 Original car sticker with car
 3rd owner purchased 2010 & put about 10,000 miles in 4 years.
 asking price is $26,950
Rear Main Seal and IMS was replaced Feb 2013 with factory parts along with new flywheel and clutch kit.
60,000 mile service done in May 2010
not much paperwork from prior owners
Issues:
Slow power steering leak. The leak is very minimal and noticed a small grease spot on my garage floor. Going to fix this in April.
Paint job #1. Someone brushed against rear bumper in July 2011 during 4th of July when parked at Lake. The rear bumper was repainted.
Paint job #2. In January 2012, right after New Year's, there was some type of sheetmetal in the road that seller hit. Had the front fenders, hood, and bumper repainted.
carfax report shows 2 accidents from the previous, 2nd owner (no info on accidents other than carfax report; seller is trying to find info from previous owners).
o 2006 accident reported
o 2007 Accident: damage to left front, damage to front pillar
I have some pictures of the car (and orginial sticker) but thought of getting feedback from this forum first before sharing.
My question to the forum is: should I run away from this car? Or if I can negotiate a lower price and the PPI (looking at structural/body work as well) comes in clean, whats a good price to try and purchase?
Keep in mind I live in CA, car is in TX..
Thanks!!
2 accidents and multiple repainting take away from the S/P.
If you plan to keep the car for a while then do the PPI and if it comes clean offer $23,000 for it.
I see the the B/B color combination as a solid plus, IMS+RMS, and mileage as pluses.
I see no paperwork, multiple accidents, and body kit as minuses. Two accidents, with 2007 accident appearing serious are definitely major issues here.
$23k looks like a fair price to me considering the - of the car. Down the road, mileage will become a lot less important while accidents will still raise the red flags to most owners. Based on my time on this forum, I would say that majority of the potential 996 owners would not touch a car with two verified accidents.
Good luck with your purchase.
Interested to see how this one materializes. As you can see from my Avatar I have a very similar car (64k miles) with the exception of the accidents and I have full maintenance history.
Work I did:
IMS, RMS, CLUTCH, WATER PUMP, AOS, OIL PRESSURE SENDING UNIT, 60k service - 2014
FisterD, tires, brakes, race pedals, double din head unit, new exhaust tips, motor mounts - 2013
@Kalashnikov - thanks for reply. Yeah, the accidents definitely make me nervous..but view it as negotiating tool more than anything..if it comes our clean, the price should still definitely drop - I agree.
@Dstutler - you selling?
Either way, would love to see some pictures of your vehicle.
thanks, all. I think in the back of my mind I was thinking the same thing..but thought maybe it was worth it to try and lower price... but you are right. Even after searching 996s for sale in Bay Area, I see a bunch listed even lower with same yr and miles.
I am in the market for a 996, so please PM me if you know of a deal!!
Have you tried looking in autotrader? FWIW, I found mine listed by a PP seller. I just did a quick search and there's quiet a few to pick from. Best of luck.
Beaten up, rode hard put away hot and wet most likely...no maint history. You know it's a money pit POS ... Run fast away. If you are DIY guy it MIGHT BE OK at max $15k.
after doing some research, the question I've seen posed before..if a 997 with more mileage is a few thousand $ more than a lower mileage 996, is it better to go with newer car (even though more miles)??
for example.
996:

997:

Depends on service history. IMO, mileage is important, but a well maintained 80k beats a sketchy 50 or 60k.
In this case, if both cars have good history (including receipts), I'd go with the 997. Pending PPI, of course.
close call between the 01 and 05 you posted but personally, the 01 gets my vote (I am partial to AEROKITS
) My 2 cents: get the car that SINGS to you (you'll know it when you see it)...AFTER IT PASSES A PPI
