Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

If it was mine, I'd wait for the snow to clear, drop a few ounces of Seafoam in the oil and run it hard...then do an oil change for the summer season.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I went to top off a little oil and found sludge inside the neck and filler cap. The junk was only near the end of the neck and it looked like melted butter; I didn't taste it to confirm if it was indeed melted butter
. The car has been driven 2,004 miles this past winter since being serviced in November and each time it went for drives to get it to operating temperature. I've been keeping an eye on coolant levels since the last service, the dipstick does not suggest intermix and the car has been running great. It has 26,940 miles and 10 oil changes in its life since new.
What may be creating this residue and is it anything I need to have addressed sooner than later?
Thanks!
It's condensation mixed with oil. Normal if you have short drives in cold and damp weather. Nothing to worry about. Should go away after long drive in drier weather.
It looks a bit excessive. How's the coolant tank look? Any goo on the dipstick? Hopefully a good long hard drive burns it off.

+1 ^^
It's common, but that seems like a lot of turds in the filler.

Thanks for the replies. Fortunately the dipstick looks clear and the coolant level is holding. It has been an extremely cold winter and the 2,000 miles since November is pathetic but the Northeast weather has not been good for cars with summer sneakers! I cleaned everything up and with the weather (hopefully) clearing up it will get out for longer drives than the 16 mile one-way commute to work provides. Here's to warmer temps soon.
NOPE! I asked the same Question a few weeks ago and I have run the car and it has all gone away.
I rand some BG MOA thru mine just in case but now it is clear as a blown nose
