I've been looking into a shifter kart, but with a Rotax installed for learning purposes, then upgrading to a full shifter...forget the chassis name, but it was a 3-letter initial for sumpin'.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Anyone else race karts on this forum? I race Rotax Max in the midwest. And I've seen quite a few Porsche's show up to the races. Just thought I would check.

POST 3Original post

No, but Iwanna...how do you like the Rotax? I've been looking into a shifter kart, but with a Rotax installed for learning purposes, then upgrading to a full shifter...forget the chassis name, but it was a 3-letter initial for sumpin'. Very competitive, I'm told. Then an unlimited membership to a local karting track (I get the keys!), figure out the trailering setup for my Wrangler, and I'm a racin'! -DT

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

If you have never raced karts before, skip the shifter thing. The Rotax will scare the crap out of you. They are no joke. Rotax is a spec class. Everyone runs the same setup. Shifters are not. Also, Rotaxes are virtually effortless to run needing very little attention and money. Prepare to rebuild your shifter every weekend, replace tires every weekend (at least once), and spend a lot of money to stay competative. That Rotax will pull a 3+ G turn at 85mph. I highly reccomend it.

POST 5Original post

I went to the Bondurant school this winter and did their 1/2 day shifter kart course. If you have little or no track experience, I would reccommend not going with the shifter. Getting used to the shifting definitely kept me from being as fast as I would have liked to have been, and there was a very steep learning curve there. We have a couple of Kart guys here at Turner Motorsport, and I can confirm that the Rotax is the way to go to get started. With 7 years of driver's ed experience, and being an instructor for DE events in cars, I have never been quite so wide-eyed as when I did a 60 MPH tank-slapper in the shifter kart. They are serious machines.

POST 6Original post

I own www.kpmfg.com I am the west coast Bridgestone tire importer. So if you guys need any tire's for you Rotax Max let me know.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

kfoote, you work at Turner? I've spent quite a bit of money there. I had an E30 M3 with, well, everything. I miss ordering stuff from you guys.

POST 8Original post

Yes, I work at Turner Motorsport. I deal with the majority of the non-BMW stuff here, as we have expanded somewhat and we are now advertising that we sell the full line of Bilstein shocks and H&R springs, (including the Bilstein PSS9 coilover kit that was released for sale earlier this week for the Boxter and Boxter S). I kind of did the opposite, going from Porsche to BMW. I worked for G&W Motorsports during race weekends in 2001 for their World Challenge team, and ended up switching to Turner because they were 20 minutes from my house rather than the 9+ hours to G&W, and I could learn a lot more about the cars by working on them at the shop as well as race weekends. One of the guys here is trying to get me hooked on karts, and if I had any more free time (oh yeah, I run a Mazda Miata in SCCA SSB, too) it would probably be successful. I'll probably find myself in some sort of endurance kart race at some point later in the year after the peak of the racing season calms down a bit.

POST 9Original post

Been racing shifters for 3-4 years with my kids. Started with 80cc now 125. Extremely fun and fast. Beats up your body much more than auto racing- used to race Spec Racer Fords. As close to a champcar or F1 car as I'll ever get!!

POST 10Original post

Oh yeah, they beat up your body... At some point during my 125cc shifter kart school, I either cracked or bruised a rib. Yes, the seat was a bit too big for me, but I would reccommend that anyone considering serious karting invest in a rib protector. It was about a month before I could lay down on my left side without pain.

POST 11Original post

Thanks for the scoop on the Rotax. Sounds like the way to go if you want to spend all of your karting time/energy on the track, not in your garage. I hear lot's of comments like skl's, that karting is like racing an F1 car, but for one-ten-thousandth the cost. Sign me up! Woo-hoo! -DT
