Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I used the CTA tool to change the mount on my manual C2.
Leading evidence: 'Use cta tool' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace mount' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Not sure if its considered the go to but from of what I can tell most use (and what Ill be using) is a genuine part - 996-375-055-05.

About to do the transmission mount on my 2003 C4S using the AGA tool.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Gearing up to do my trans mount, anyone have any experience with the CTA tool? Can I do this with the trans in the car? (would also buy a used tool if someone is done with theirs
)
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/por...-tool-cta-2303
Plenty of info on here for many of these, they all seem similar.
Just make sure when using it that you push in from the chamfered side of the trans, so it doesn't try to install crooked which damages the aluminum.
Easy enough, I did mine with the car on axle stands.
No, you dont have to freeze it. Not really enough mass in the mount to have a lot of shrinkage. They are designed to be pushed in a lot easier than a bearing.
A little bit of lube helped initially and make sure you grease the threads on the mount.
I used the CTA tool to change the mount on my manual C2. Transmission stayed in the car. No freezer was necessary.
The washers can take quite a beating... when I rented the tool to other members, I'd always replace them. After 5-6 uses, though, the threaded rods were bent and cross-threaded.
You can probably find another member on here who would be willing to rent their tool to you.
About to do the transmission mount on my 2003 C4S using the AGA tool. Would be happy to rent or sell it when I complete the job (which expect to be the next week or two). Plan to use the tool with car lifted on jack stands.
In meantime welcome any tips from others whove done this already.
This looks similar to any wheel bearing press kit, any reason I cant use one of those? Its about the size of a wheel bearing and doesnt look as tight.
Most recent VWs/Audis have a similar size press in bushing called a dogbone that is a pendulum mount for the engine - the big caveat is you bolt through it vertically, so there is access from only one side. The 996 trans mount seems very reasonable by comparison!
I think I have the tool situation sorted out. My car is also missing I believe the 2 transmission stops (the thin urethane pieces on the side of the mount), anyone able to confirm if this is this the right part number?
996-375-255-05 for a 2004 manual C2.
The reason will be the size! It needs to be the correct diameter as the outside of the mount is quite skinny. Too big and wont fit through the trans, too small and it will wreck the new mount.
People have made there own from pipe, its just finding the correct size and having it on hand when you do it.
Borrow or rent the tool and its easy.
I just changed one out with the CTA tool, was easy once I figured out how to use it. There is basically no way you are going to be "make something work". The tool is $190, totally worth it. I'm keeping mine as I work on 996's.
It's basically the same as the AGA tool and the video on that one makes it seem super straightforward. I'm just waiting on my mount to show up and I'll let er rip
It's been awhile since I did mine with the AGA tool but I remember it being pretty straightforward. I used some el-cheapo ratcheting box wrenches and I think put a little grease on the Acme threads on the tool. I don't remember if it seemed like the grease helped or not.
Thanks - helpful to know. I watched the AGA video and seems very straight forward but curious to know if there were any gotchas that came up for people. Glad to hear you didnt experience any.
Ha, plan to use those exact wrenches myself!
Not sure if its considered the go to but from of what I can tell most use (and what Ill be using) is a genuine part - 996-375-055-05. The AGA video also says that the OE is a Lemforder part.
If you search here,. there is a detailed post with pictures. I was going to post one, but then I found that one.

There is a more detailed post somewhere on this forum with pictures. I did mine with the engine/trans out of the car.
The main gotcha is to make sure you have the correct trans mount bushing (there are some that are a little too large) and that you start it straight and dont make too many turns on either nut as the bushing enters the carrier. Once its far enough into the carrier it becomes obvious how many turns to make to each one (as the bushing starts to bind in the carrier the nuts become harder to turn).
*** I would recommend getting the bushing from AGA as its the correct size and the leading edge is beveled. Good Luck!
Much appreciated! Bought the mount from Porsche (AGA only had the Boxster mount) so fingers crossed right size. Good to know on the turns. Hope to tackle tonight!
Thanks! ! Was able to get it done last night. Everything was pretty straightforward but took some patience and iterating with different tools. AGA must have updated the nuts included with the tool and I wasnt able to fit a ratcheting wrench around them. Used a combination if a deep socket on stubby flex ratchet and standard box wrench (which barely had clearance to move the top nuts). But with patience its installed and everything's back together. Thanks for all the pointers.
With that, have an AGA tool thats now available for sale or rent.
