Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

noticed leakage on garage floor (1/2 inch diameter) after 24 hours sitting time. Dealer said I need a new RMS but said that this would not increase my chances for a second seal in the future. Tech said no connection between RMS and engine problems since RMS leaks are generally very slow leaks. Tech also said I need a roller bearing due to engine whining noise he heard - also somewhat common. Said continued use could have resulted in overheating and severe radiator problems. Luckily, both parts in stock. Can anyone explain when the RMS leak results in engine problem? THANKS.

POST 3Original post

Did you go under the car and checked that the oil drop is from the gearbox/engine joint? RMS leak is common and i did replacement. It is better you change it immediate before your clutch starts slipping and requires replacement. This is the resulting problem. Otherwise the seal is just a seal and can only cause loss of oil but no direct engine problem to my knowledge.. Porsches whine from the engine as far as my little experience, but prefferable to change bearing than to regret.. It's just that it's strange for a bearing to spoil so soon.. Waz

POST 4Original post

i was told by my dealer that RMS is the last seat in the engine, the crank shaft exit the engine to the tranny, that's where RMS is. some are due to leaks others are due to the crankshaft out of tolerance. my was 3 thousands out of spec. you should insist they measure it, b/c if it's indeed out of tolerance, you get new engine. we are talking about very tiny dimension here. my tech told me that many dealer won't bother or don't know how to measure to that accuracy.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Waz and John for the feedback. They did not, and I did not ask for, a measure of the RMS spec differential. Too late now. It turns out my alternator (not the bearing) needed replacement and was causing the whining. Tech said unusual to go so early. All seems fine now.
