Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

R&T ran an article about Pirelli testing 16s, 17s, 18s, and 19s, on a BMW 5er.
Leading evidence: 'Run article about pirelli' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Run article about pirelli' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Suggestion
I'm by no means a physicist, but think about it: if bigger rims made cars noticeably slower, we'd all be running phatty 12's instead of "dubs".

Their own test data showed the 17s to be the best choice for that application.

I'm thinking of lowering the car with H&R progressive rate springs (about 1.1 inch drop) and using spacers to bring out the front and back rims (17") to give it a more aggressive look and enhance handling performance...
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello all..
I have a 1999 996 with 17" rims... I absolutely love the way the 18" rims look on the car but I've heard it will take 0.5 seconds off your acceleration... apparently there is more rotational mass in an 18" rim and therefore harer to turn it... I think 0.5 seconds is a big difference... any commetns on this?.... also the 18" rims would be heavier... by how much I don't know...

18" rims do look damn hot though!!!

I'd say go w/the lightest 18s you can, and you should be fine. The 18" Carrera wheels are very light for the price.
My car has the Sport Designs (bought it off the lot), and they are pretty porky. Still drives nicely, though.
That said, lightweight 18s are in my future at some point.
Scott.
IMO, 18s should improve your track time because the lower profile tire provides stiffer support through corners. Also if you go with the lightweigh carrera alloys (5 spoke), they will actually be lighter than your stock 17's.

It has something to do with the gearing. Larger wheels would yield a higher terminal velocity, but at the track, no straight is long enough to take advantage of this. I understand that the 17 inchers maximize acceleration. Any technical explanation would be appreciated.

Mike
I believe the rolling diameters (rears) for a 996 with 17s and 18s (285/30-18s and 255/40-17s) are the same, gearing shouldn't change. I've driven 996s with both 17s and 18s and the benefit of 18s is very noticable on that car. I think 19s are too heavy and prone to damage. R&T ran an article about Pirelli testing 16s, 17s, 18s, and 19s, on a BMW 5er. Their own test data showed the 17s to be the best choice for that application. Shorter, stiffer sidewalls are not necessarily better in the real world.
another way to look at it.... either spend the money
on 18" and rubber or keep the 17" and spend
the money on lowering springs... which will
handle better... a stock height car with 18" or
a lowered 17" vehicle... correct me if I'm wrong
but that is a no brainer... no??
as for gearing... it stays the same provided
you use porsche specific tire sizes for
18" and 17" respectively..
I read an article on the board where somebody
was comparing the 2002 carrera to the 1999 and
through various acceleration times was making a
poing of the 2002 having a much more flexible
engine.. .but they also mentioned 0.5 second
difference between the rim size... to me that
is a lot...
think about it! 0.5 seconds through the
quarter mile is significant...
cheers
Pete
