Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That is it. I put motor and gearbox back in, new IMS, rear main, and a bunch of other goodies and car drove great for a couple weeks. Then got up to go play some golf, single click. No multi-click like a battery, just a single. So, I bought a new Bosch starter and put that in. Still same issue. Jumping does not work and the motor spins freely. Roll starting the car it starts fine. No codes, nothing. Thoughts? I have been searching about without much to find. Only thought is maybe Cam or Crank sensor, or a bad ground or something. 02 C2 manual. Thanks.

POST 2Original post

Ignition switch? Had something similar happen to me....couldn't figure it. Change the switch and it solved problem. As strange as it sounds!

POST 3Original post

interesting, I just woke up to a single click starter as well....

POST 4Original post

I just lived this with four cars in the last 4 weeks. Two Ferraris and two Porsches. Put a volt meter on the battery and try starting the car. If the voltage drops to anything less than 9V, replace the battery. Put the volt meter on the solenoid wire and try starting the car. If you do not see 12V at the terminal while starting, replace the ignition switch. Although in your case, there must be a signal there for it to "click." If the starter motor turns freely and not engaging the ring gear, replace the starter.

Thought about this, although I do not have any of the other symptoms. I am willing to attempt the part due to its availability and cost. I will give this a go. Showed 11.8v yesterday with a test at the battery. I did NOT test the voltage while attempting to start however. The starter does click, again a new starter has the same issue as the one I pulled out. I did get a battery/alternator/generator message randomly after many attempts to rotate key. But the car would not jump start from a charged source. So that tells me it is not battery or alternator. I will check ground again tonight as well as get the removed starter a test. I know some have had experience with a bad NEW starter; I have trouble believing that is the issue either. Thanks regardless for the info, I will continue to investigate.

POST 6Original post

Quote: Showed 11.8v yesterday with a test at the battery" That is already a bad battery.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 20162388

I agree that is low voltage, but....Why would jumping not turn the starter? Had 14v with the jump box connected.

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 20162404

It could be a loose/bad ground not allowing the circuit to complete. Have you checked all the grounds related? I had a similar issue on a vehicle before and only after changing a perfectly good starter did I find the faulty ground. The solenoid would click to engage the starter circuit but I wasn't getting any voltage flow through the starter motor due to the bad ground.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 20162528

I "hand" checked this last night after installing starter. Seemed tight. I will double check tonight as I agree, since motor was out, I reinstalled this ground on the chassis side. At the least I have a new starter with 75k on motor. So at least that is covered for the indefinite future.

POST 10Original post

Check the voltage on the heavy cable at the starter motor while turning the ignition switch. If it drops below battery voltage replace the Y cable.

Luckily I had replaced the Y cable on the previous motor just before it blew. So I have an extra in like-new condition. It is a pain to replace, but I would have assumed the symptoms would be the same as well. The car started strong until this occurred. The last time I had consistent slow or no start once hot. Copy that. I am going to check ground and also starter relay to see. I will jump the relay and also skip the relay to see. Thanks!!

POST 13Original post

If you get a strong click from the starter AND the headlights don't dim (voltage does not drop) while holding the key turned there's a problem with the heavy wiring somewhere, which could include the short wire from the solenoid to the starter. If the lights dim (voltage drops) then there is either an electrical short in the starter or the starter is mechanically jammed. I did have one odd problem where the trigger wire to the starter got pinched and ended up intermittently shorting to the starter housing. This did not make the loud click from the starter and it did dim the headlights. This was tough to track down as the starter worked fine out of the car and did nothing when installed.

Excellent information. As stated in initial post, car drove wonderfully for that 2 week period, clean starts, strong starts etc. Overnight, something changed obviously. Anyway, this is helpful as I am no electrical genius but get the basics. Thanks again for the input, appreciated.

POST 15Original post

Just a thought, it could be a bad/weak cell in the battery so it doesn't make the complete circuit. Maybe try a new battery. If the battery is over 4 years old it's about time for a replacement anyway.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 20163030

A fair thought as well. I have considered a battery as well just in case.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, that was a $413 (including starter and ignition switch) oversight. When you grab a cable and assume it is tight without actually checking nut torque, you become an idiot. I am you... The ground strap was loose on the chassis side as I did not torque it a second time. Thanks for the input guys. I also paid for a ton of research as I learned a bit about the additional issues with the ignition and I learned how to get rid of the clutch safety switch. Cheers.
