The 996 replaced an older Italian car that I owned for years.
Leading evidence: 'Replace older italian car' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'turn indicator stalk and thought' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check 2000-present mbz' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

When I picked up my car for the first time I remember hitting the OBC stalk a few times thinking it was the turn indicator stalk and thought to myself, "I better be careful or I'm going to break this stalk!" I'm with you, it has a flimsy feel to it but for the amount of time I use either the cruise or OBC it is a minor gripe in my book as well.

One of my first DIY's on my '82 replace the signal light unit.....

The car is amazing and it makes me giggle when I have to be delicate setting the cruise control...
It allowed me to continue using my turn signal, but I had to manually cancel the left turn signal (it would remain engaged) and constantly hold the arm up for the right turn signal (it wouldn't stay on).
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Funny!
Actually, I do agree with your assessment, and sometimes find myself not wanting to use my turn signal, to extend the life of that stalk. I haven't seen any chit-chat here of rampant stalk-breakage, but they do seem a bit flimsy to me. The visor mirror cover attachment is flimsy too. Broke off one of those on my car, and there's no easy fix.
That and your center console lid. And your seat latches. And the seat rail covers. And the lenses on your "alien eyes" on your center post, and...well, just about everything in your cabin!
^^^^ Hmmm... I can't remember if the plastic that is broken is part of the cover or the part that remains fixed to the visor. I looked at it about a year ago, and I think determined that the whole visor needed replacing to fix it. Well, as I rarely apply eyeliner while driving, I think that's one item that will remain broken.
My turn signal switch and both visor mirror covers broke last year.
There was a small plastic piece inside the turn signal control that broke. It allowed me to continue using my turn signal, but I had to manually cancel the left turn signal (it would remain engaged) and constantly hold the arm up for the right turn signal (it wouldn't stay on). All the other arms functioned correctly. I ordered a replacement switch from Suncoast and replaced it (about an hour). I found good step-by-step replacement DIY instructions. Link:

The visor mirror covers don't bother me but I might add that to a fix list some day. They both broke at the hinge. Since both covers are removed my C4S cab is now lighter than spec..... :-)

I'm with you, it has a flimsy feel to it but for the amount of time I use either the cruise or OBC it is a minor gripe in my book as well. It's still the best car I have ever owned!
I think about these little things a lot. I would understand if these were yugo's. But for a $90,000 car 15 years ago you would expect more.
However, I grew up driving american cars and they were good at cupholders and mirrors, etc. Just could not build a car that was fun to drive.
So I will take the germans - the stuff we are griping about was an afer thought to them.
Agreed. I think the Porsche engineers just don't think of these items as priorities. I've read the 997 and newer models have improved some. However, my BMW's have always been the best; fit, finish and quality. And Audi is a clear leader. You think there's share some insight.
Again, in my mind it's such a minor gripe. The car is amazing and it makes me giggle when I have to be delicate setting the cruise control...
I was admiring the sturdy turn signal construction in my KIA rental the other day...

P.S.--On the first 60 deg. day of the year yesterday, I was also admiring the sound and feel of >5000 rpm's with the sunroof/windows open. Also, the seat is pretty well built to handle me being pushed into it during said >5000 rpm blast...
Easy fix just do like everyone in South Florida and don't use your turn signals. If you do it just tips off other drivers as to your intentions and they will just try and cut you off so solve two problems.
That's funny. In Scottsdale when you come to a 4-way stop its not the person who gets their first, or the person to the right who has the right-of way, but the one with the most expensive car!
Unfortunately, I usually have to go last.
Already doing this here in LALA land for reason stated.
As for the cruise control stalk, I had the same worry as I have 108,K on mine & use it constantly everywhere I go to prevent tickets & maintain steady speed on the "free"way. I wish my 2007 Lexus CC worked as well as the 2000 Porsche. Now if you want to talk flimsy CC stalks check 2000-present MBZ.
One of my first DIY's on my '82 replace the signal light unit..... But yeah, I have been meaning to look at mine since it's quite loose but hey, it's been working so....................
Not since our 62 356B have I seen Porsche's engineering efforts & was quite disappointed w/ our recent 01 996 purchase seeing the amount of plastic incorporated into its design.
It obviously saves weight , $ , & ease to accomplish difficult structures, but for integrity, & functionality due to its minimal strength & thermal instability, it's a downer to see so much of it in this caliber of vehicle.
Even the coil housings are of an inferior material as they shouldn't be cracking ---there is better phenolic/plastic material to handle the job but obviously they didn't use it .
So far at least, plastic engineering hasn't taken over the drive train & suspension , but who knows ?
The 996 replaced an older Italian car that I owned for years. Admittedly, I felt the same way as some of you folks when I started driving it and kept thinking to myself... How can it possibly be almost as flimsy as the Italians?
I'm definitely careful when putting the directionals on, especially if I have the wheel slightly turned and it's going to be engaging against one of the detentes that normally clicks it off when the wheel is coming back to center.
Work on a 996 then a newer BMW then report back. You know, after every BMW plastic piece that you remove crumbles and has to be replaced. As far as modern cars go, the 996 is actually pretty well made.
Cars are disposable now so there is no need for a company to make them any more sturdy. As long as they last long enough to survive the warranty period then they're good.
