Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

If it breaks down too much and I just can't stand the maintenance, I will sell it for what I owe and go buy a slightly used Ford Focus ST or Mini or something.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So Friday I pick up my 2002 911 C4S. It has 56K miles, a new clutch, all of its 60K maintenance done, and an upgraded RMS and IMS bearing. The only thing the dealer could find wrong with it in the PPI was that the tires were nearly five years old. That is it. I paid a premium for it. But it is, assuming the dealer PPI is correct, about as good of an example as you can find.
So, will it be the engine failing maintenance nightmare it is claimed to be by the various LN Engineering and Flat six people or will it be the fabulous daily driver that numerous owners claim it is. I and my bank account are about to find out.
If it fails catastrophically, I will sell my motorcycle, pull some money out of savings and sell it on ebay as a project car and go buy myself a cheap hot hatchback. If it breaks down too much and I just can't stand the maintenance, I will sell it for what I owe and go buy a slightly used Ford Focus ST or Mini or something. If it turns out to be as good as I hope, I will pay it off and sell it for 20 or 25K in a few years, finance another 30K loan and probably be able to get myself in a post IMS 997. No matter what I plan to drive the living hell out of it and have a lot of fun while I own it.
I will occasionally post on here to either confirm the haters or provide a happy story to contrast the various horror stories. I am pretty optimistic. The car is just unbelievable to drive. And I think it should keep a good chunk of its value over four years. The haters are right in that the 996 will never be a collector car and take off in value the way the 993 and 986s have. But they are wrong when they claim it will go the way of the 944 and 928. The 944 and 928 were not that great even at their best. The 996 in contrast is an incredible piece of technology and amazing to drive. As a result, someone will always want them, especially the higher optioned versions. Not everyone gives a crap about round headlamps or incredible tradition of air cooled.
So wish me luck.
Thanks JohnnyRocker.
I plan to use it as a DD. You really can't overstate how amazing they are at their best. The car just wants to go and wants to rev. I don't understand how people leave them in their garages like they do.
Congrats. I entered into my latest round (my 4th) of Porsche ownership with some trepidation as well. I'm aware it's not going to give me the Timex reliability my Honda S2000 gave me. (11 years 125,000 miles ZERO issues) but I can put up with budgeting $2,500 per year average and hope nothing catastrophic comes up. My last Porsche a 1986 944 Turbo broke the bank. Here's to hoping you and your C4S have many issue free years together.
Congratulations and welcome
Hopefully you can get some sleep between now and Friday. We all look forward to seeing a few pictures after you pick it up and go for a drive of course
Enjoy, it sounds like you got a beaut.
Congrats on the purchase! Keep in mind that if you read nothing but oncology journals and speak only to cancer surgeons, you'll probably start to think that everyone has cancer.
Post some pictures, and enjoy the hell out of your 911.
I'd have to disagree regarding the 944....
- Car and Driver's Ten Best list from 1983 through 1985, and the Turbo made the list for 1986.
- In 1984, Car and Driver named the 944 the Best Handling Production Car in America.
+944
I've owned three 944s, and the last one, a 1990 S2 was a very fun car. Solid, reliable, easy to drive, cheap to maintain (for a Porsche), inexpensive to buy and insure. I want one again.
The 996 is a whole 'nuther level of course....
