Suggestion

since we're talking about how our car's performed well over other cars, I ran an M5 from 95-130mph, and I must say it was one of the most breathtaking experience I had never though my little 996 would be able to take such a challenge.

I thought it was a 540i at first but noticed as I kept going to 90+ it was gaining too fast so I realized it must be a Monster 5 looking to test my car's limit.

BTW, I was close but not close enough to use the drift, didn' want to be that close just in case since I didn't know the driver and would be kind of rude and dangerous.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Met this guy today on the road while doing my 'late-sunday run'. Gorgeous looking supra with the 2 storey wing in the back.. lights on and proud like an eagle.. He took the challenge though he looked like some hotshot in the army (some four stars or so i could count on the shoulders..) -Jump Start: supra was toasted -High speeds: he was looking for me! Never able to keep up and i had to wait on the kerbs to see him again I am really disappointed at the supra really! OK OK some of you guys SupraTT owners want to really get back at me and yes, i've seen the Supra vs 996TT video.. But what am referring to is the STOCK supra is a waste compared to a STOCK 996. No offense to anyone really. My first real challenge and looking for more.. Now where's the chicken M5 whom i lost and the WRX-STI is not even calling me. The Audi TT guy dumped the idea coz he knows the results already.. I got only the bikers to play with! Next number plate for my 996 should be T-REX i suppose! Waz

POST 2Original post

A stock Supra Turbo or non-Turbo there is a big difference. I owned a stock Turbo and in a straight line I would say it was a tiny tiny little bit faster than my 996. A slow shift either way could change the results both cars are very comparable in a straight line. The 996 wins hands down on the track. That being said to modify a Supra Turbo is very easy, for $2,500 you can get the car to easily 400 plus horse power. Based on my current car you can tell which one I prefered.

POST 3Original post

i had a Supra TT,320 HP..it was blazing fast..maybe u went up against the non-turbo

POST 4Original post

Both are great cars - with a few basic mods a Supra will really go hard... in Targa Tasmania - (www.targa.org.au) we race on roads and it is a good way to compare the cars. In road rally prep the Supra is heavier but has more overall power. - Pretty much line ball with a GT3. I find the porsche gets the power down better with the weight at the rear, turns in better and has better gearing. The Supra brakes better than a stock 996 (with Pagids), and has more low end torque.. In the end its a question of budget - mine wont stretch to 2 996's!!

since we're talking about how our car's performed well over other cars, I ran an M5 from 95-130mph, and I must say it was one of the most breathtaking experience I had never though my little 996 would be able to take such a challenge. about 10:30pm down the interstate last weekend there was nobody on the road, I see some xenon headlights from the back chasing me entering the freeway sprinting up to 80mph. I thought it was a 540i at first but noticed as I kept going to 90+ it was gaining too fast so I realized it must be a Monster 5 looking to test my car's limit. Quickly I shifted into third gas down and noticed the car was still gaining on my passenger side his front bumper on my rear tire, we're now both head to head. Caught in a challenge that I couldn't back down I upshift at 102mph from 3rd to 4th without even letting off on the gas, just kicking the clutch I'm still able to keep the same distance side to side until finally at 130mph still side by side, infact I think I had a few inches gaining toward the end the M5 apparently realizes that he won't have me for lunch and this is going nowhere so he backs off. The sad part is that he never pulled me on that straight run as I noticed later I slow down and after we exchanged thumbs up and waves, that he had two extra people in his car. Had he been alone, I'm sure I would be toast. The funny thing is that I don't think he realized having passengers caused him a big dissadvantage as he was very amazed at how I kept at his side and all three guys gave me a BIG thumbs up.

I raced the current M5 in the highway, right off the poll I stuck with behind him (we both had one passenger each) until 6 gear, his advantage in accel was minimal, until 120mph+ bends came and HE was toast! I could brake later, carry higher corner speed and get on the gas much quicker so his extra 100HP weren't enough to stop me from passing him under full accel out of a bend at around 140mph.

POST 8Original post

Carlos, I had an M5 in 99 and man was the brakes on that thing awful <img border="0" alt="[ouch]" title="" src="graemlins/c.gif" /> the carrera that i raced was a 99 as well and we pretty much were even with my nose slightly ahead so these cars are evenly matched. The 02 targa that I had was noticeably faster though and I had virtually no problem with passing an M5. Still love the car though, other then the brakes, it was one hell of a sedan

POST 9Original post

Absoulutely, in fact, the M5 is my favorite in its class precisely for its sports handling characteristics for a sedan. But ist true, it can't beat a 996 in its territory and only HP is not going to make up for that. You can't have the best of both worlds

POST 10Original post

Carlos, were you drafting on him as you mentioned you were behind him? I learned that drafting at 100+ can pull your car 2-3 lengths closer than if yuo were racing side by side. I used to cheat racing my SLK against my friend's Evo M3 and slingshot past him 130mph making his car look like a toy. You're right the M5 can't handle vs. the Carrera, but its straightline speed is still one to watch out for on the open highway. I think the two extra passengers approx 300lbs+ prevented him from gapping me at least 1 car length. In the long run though, the M5 unless he chipped it, would have cut out at 150, which I could have passed him at that point regardless. But if he did chip it, it would have been another story once again, as it would have had me for lunch as I must say those things are fast with a chip. I have a friend with 450hp at the crank with just chip and exhaust. The thing is so powerful, it peels out 19 inch rims from 1st to second, chirps hard 2nd to 3rd.

POST 11Original post

Yes, without the speed limiter the 996 is no match in top speed, the extra 100HP of the M5 will give it greater top speed regardless of the suspension and weight. BTW, I was close but not close enough to use the drift, didn' want to be that close just in case since I didn't know the driver and would be kind of rude and dangerous.

POST 12Original post

i thought the top end on the 996 was around 175? How much more is a M5 going to go? Its drag coefficient has to be worse than a sleek 996.

POST 13Original post

Actually, believe it or not, the E39-M5 has a lower Cx value (0,287) than the 996 (0,3 for pre-2002 and 0,29 for 2002 on) and top speed pretty much depends on drag, HP and gear ratio. So the M5 really has it there, even if the drag and gearing is the same.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I thought the drag coefficient is well, a coefficient! meaning the M5 might have a lower one, but the surface area of the M5 is much higher than the 996.. meaning the total force resisting is eventually higher, and given a same horsepower *have a TT equivalent HP* the 996 hands over the M5 serious butt? Waz

POST 15Original post

Your right Waz, the drag depends on the Cx, frontal surface area of the car (and the actual speed which would affect equally both cars). What I don't know is how much the difference in surface area influences in the whole equation?

POST 16Original post

Smoked a 300 zx? twin turbo with mods(large twin fart cans and who knows what else) in my '03 X51,no mods -yet. He wuz actin' all bad on a crowded(rush hour) street in K.C.This bozo was blasting in and out of traffic after he saw me behind him. I wasn't about to risk my life and everyone else's. However, due to traffic ,I was able to catch up and we both entered the I-35 on-ramp(2-lane)at the same time.I was already at about 4500(anticipating the race), and I hit it.He had his windows down and his t-tops off -as loud as my engine was I may have damaged his eardrums as I blew past him. He couldn't keep up to save his life. I slowed down(due to upcoming traffic)about 2 mi. later and he was a yellow speck in my rear-view mirror.I'm not sure if I should be proud of this as I know little or nothing about 300zx? .I don't even know if I have the correct name for the car.It was fun anyway

POST 17Original post

I can't wait to meet an M5.I know I'll smoke him.I just need to learn how to drive my car at a D.E.!

POST 18Original post

Man this sounds like "kill stories" from other forums. Well to add the spice I street dragged an M5 on sunset blvd in San Francisco early Sunday morning and happened to see the black M5 stabbing the throttle-man for a sedan-its **** fast. I was curious how my car would do so we finally met at a stoplite and off we go from 0-85mph and beat him by one car length but pretty impressive for a sedan which is one of my favorites. We both gave the thumbs up and went our own way. Regards. Mike

POST 19Original post

While we're comparing which car is faster, I look back a few years ago when I was just a college boy with no direction, knowing nothing but only fixing up cars. In 98 I upgraded from my 95 E36 bimmer to a SLK, and I thought that I had my dream car as Renntech had a killer SLK upgrade kit 300hp (a few years ago, a mid 13 second Quarter mile car was already fast for the street as E36 M3's only did 14's Quarter mile.) One night at dinner, my father had mentioned to another guy he introduced me to that I was all happy that I got a new supercharged SLK, and that I was excited to drive it fast. The guy only had a few words to tell me... "if you want a fast car, just get a porsche" This is probably one of the most meaningful statements I have heard. It may not be the fastest on paper in comparison to other cars, but in terms of handling, speed & power, looks, luxury out of the box, you can't get anything better period. The funny thing is when I heard the guy tell me this, I thought he was only trying to condecend on me as I was a young college boy with only an SLK to afford, but later after getting a porsche for myself I realized that he only wanted to give a very good piece of advice.

We tried hard to pass him and took us longer to keep up with him, first stage i was behind him and that was an advantage for us and then i started to take over very very slowly from the right side until we were aside and that was on 260 km/hr and then passed him, but i wasn't pretty sure (Waz disagreed with me) that he didn't take off his foot from the gas pedal

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

He chickened out and realized he cant cope.. Remember fadi, that was when you went up to 294km/hr and he was a blue dot the size of a fly behind you? ..I'll never ride with you again, crazy brains (or maybe just once or twice!) Waz

POST 22Original post

unless you have forced induction or GT3 motor, I doubt even a modded 996 can take a modded M5. My friend had a 330HP 996 and it can't even take a 430hp E55, he is a good driver, proven through several drags, lost 4 rounds against an E55 which takes him avg 5 car lengths 0-150mph. The E55 is about even with a modded M5. The m5 driver probably didn't know how to drive.

POST 23Original post

Be careful with these drags...where I live there are a lot of modded cars (supras, vipers, etc..) best bet for 996's (I had modded one) is to catch on highway not from light, not a good feeling to have a mustang cobra beat ya! The 996 engine is very limited to increase HP, better off at higher speeds.....thats part of reason why I sold for TT, there are many mods with this engine to increase bhp and torque.....anyways good to see you are opening up the p-cars on the road!
