Before doing the synchros I replaced clutch, then tranny gear oil at 45k, installed DIY Porsche 997 shift kit, later I had new tranny mount installed, then DIY motor mounts.

In addition to the extra effort required, I seem to remember that when leaving 2nd gear and aiming for 3rd, the shift lever would start moving more to the front than to the right, then when resistance increased, the direction of travel changed a bit in the clockwise direction, and then it went back to the original direction until it got into 3rd gear.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm close to buying a 996 I just test drove. I'm mainly worried about one thing: a very stiff shift from 2nd to 3rd. I assumed it was because of the factory short shift kit (option XCZ) - I've never driven a 996 with one before. But I have also heard that synchromesh problems are most likely to affect shifting between 2nd and 3rd ... It may be that this got better when the car got warmer (not sure, except that it didn't get worse). I did not notice any grinding or other noise that might arise from a bad synchromesch. Any thoughts about what could have caused this stiffness/awkwardness? Does it sound like what the factory short shift kit would cause? Thanks!

What ever it is, don't buy until THEY remedy the problem and you re test the car.

POST 5Original post

Ask yourself why it only happens with 3rd gear (or 2nd gear) and not 4, 5 or 6? I know from experience with my 996... Go drive others and see if it happens with the other cars.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It doesn't happen with other cars. But other cars (which I've driven) don't have the short shift kit. So no one thinks this sounds like the result of this kit?

sds911, thanks for your posts. Do if I understand correctly that you believe that if it were a misadjusted shift mechanism, or the short shift kit, I would notice something in other gears? Thanks again!

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Unless/until I learn more on this forum, I'll have a PPI done. I have to be sure that if the specialist who does the PPI tells me there isn't a synrchomesh problem, there really isn't. Is this something that a specialist could mis-diagnose?

POST 9Original post

From what I read a short shift kit could make it more noticeable, but doubt it is the cause. Since it is an intangible quality you will get different opinions. I finally had a dealer open up the tranny under CPO warranty and replace synchros. Expensive and annoying if not covered under warranty. I would not buy the car if it were me until it is fixed. Before doing the synchros I replaced clutch, then tranny gear oil at 45k, installed DIY Porsche 997 shift kit, later I had new tranny mount installed, then DIY motor mounts. Nothing really worked until dealer opened up tranny and replaced parts and only after numerous trips to different dealers. Several techs agreed it did not feel right often overruled by service manager (i.e., depends on who you ask - subjective). It always was worse at cold start too. I've driven the 997 with short shift kit and it was smooth shifting into all gears.
