Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I don't want the compressor to run at all during the winter/cooler months and I certainly don't want it running without an over-ride ability when I use defrost/defog/demist functionality.

Leading evidence: 'Run without an over-ride ability' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'problem has something' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Run without an over-ride ability' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Having said all of that I would suspect your problem has something to do with the defrost/defog/demist mode control circuit.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have read the manual, have done what it says, and for the life of me it feels like the AC is always on when my climate control is on. 1. Full Auto . The little snowflake icon is on. Air blows cold 2. Full Auto, turn off the snowflake button, icon disappears from screen. Air blows cold. 3. Manually set the fan speed, indicate what vents I want on, snowflake icon is off, Air blows cold. This all on a 85 degree day yesterday. Am I missing something? In most cars you can just have the external air come in without the AC kicking on. I can't seem to have that happen here, so I just turn the whole thing off.

POST 2Original post

I had my independent Porsche Mechanic (Squire's) install a switch on the rear wall of the inside of the glove box in my 01 C4 so I can manually open the compressor clutch circuit. I don't want the compressor to run at all during the winter/cooler months and I certainly don't want it running without an over-ride ability when I use defrost/defog/demist functionality. The 996 series does have a rather serious design flaw within the climate control system. Most modern day climate control systems (automatic A/C) when operating predominantly in heating mode will "leak" a quite significant level of system airflow to the windshield defrost/defog/demist outlets in order to keep the windshield "warmed", hopefully well above DEWPOINT, thereby making the possiblility of interior condensation forming more remote. In the 996 someone has miss-programmed this function in that it "leaks" a lot more airflow to these outlets during cooling mode, damn COLD airflow, than in heating mode. Very little, too little, in heating mode IMMHO. On a hot and humid day you can suddenly find yourself with virtually no forward visibility due to the inadvertant chilling of the windsield, and the resultant heavy exterior condensation, in fully automatic mode. You must ALWAYS remember to over-ride the outlet airflow mode on hot days, manually route the airflow from the dash or dash and footwell, otherwise you will be chilling the windshield surface and even if not subject to condensation you will be losing a LOT of system cooling capacity via the glass. Having said all of that I would suspect your problem has something to do with the defrost/defog/demist mode control circuit. The 996 series will always run the A/C compressor in this mode regardless of your manual control or the status of the icon display. Which is why I have a switch installed.

Cool, thanks for the detailed answer. I have a few months of warranty left, I'll see if I can get it done under that. Thanks Art
