Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I had relatively new capsules (see below), so I was suspecting the ballast, but I first swapped the capsules between the left and right side to isolate the problem, and took that opportunity to lightly scuff the various electrical contact areas of the HID capsule and the socket. This fixed the intermittent problem, both headlights turn on reliably 100% since scuffing the contact area.
Leading evidence: 'Replace capsules between the left and right side' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check connection' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

You might check the connection before you drop the coin for a new bulb, it could just be loose.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My passenger side HID light is flickering when I go over some bumps. The effect can be replicated by striking the headlight assembly with my hand. I am assuming that I need to replace the bulbs.
But here's the question: The existing light bulbs are OSRAM D2S but the book says to replace with Philips D2S.
So do I follow the existing bulb or the owner's manual?

It's a bulb that meets a common spec. Just like an H4 can be made by a bunch of different companies, same deal with the D2S. It shouldn't matter either way. You might check the connection before you drop the coin for a new bulb, it could just be loose.
OneWhippedPuppy , thanks for the advice on the connection. That certainly would be cheaper. I was surprised at the $100/bulb cost but was also able to find them for half that on Amazon.
I replaced both of mine a couple of years ago, and it really made a difference. They should always be replaced in pairs. The color temperature and intensity of HID bulbs changes over time. I think you'll like the improvement.
Ecstuning.com has a number of options from Ones in a Porsche box to third party (and most likely oem) replacements. You should definitely replace in pairs and I think you'll be able to get two for the price of that single Porsche part.
OneWhippedPuppy seems to have been right so far. Took the light apart last night and although there didn't seem to be anything grossly wrong with the connection, the light is no longer flickering.
So we will see how long this lasts
narkose,
Make sure you replace both Bulbs at the same Time. I bought mine from here about 2 years ago.

I got the Philips 85122, was a night and day difference, my original bulbs were Tired and Dimmed a lot compare to new ones.
Any idea how long the lights last before they are tired and dimmed as Zookie describes? I'm familiar with HID lights going pinkish prior to dying, but not a gradual decrease in brightness.
Mine have typically turned more of a purple color when they failed, and they tend to flicker.
HID bulbs do change color quite a bit over their life. They change significantly in the first 150 hours of use. Then they gradually fade in intensity and color temperature over the course of the next 10 years or so, until they eventually fail.
One of my HID headlight would intermittently not come on last summer, sometimes turning the engine off and back on would make it work but other times it won't. (Note this is a Canadian car with full headlights on as the DRL, so I cannot just use the headlight switch)

My car when purchased 3 years ago had 2,025 hours and just over 50,000 miles, so the HID capsules had been on for 2,000+ hours, they were definitely noticeably dimmer than I expected, so I changed them to a pair of Philips capsules, the new capsules were noticeably brighter. I would say 1,000 to 1,500 hours is probably max usable life.
