Cassette Holder In Dash

Has anyone taken the ugly cassette tape holder out of the center dash? Can you switch it out for the CD holder or another empty pocket? Thanks, Jake

Easy to replace with either one. You may not want two empty pockets though. PS -- you have a typo in your signature.

If you "eject" the cassette holders, grasp them, and pull gently, you'll get it out without breaking anything. And of course you'll want two empty pockets. I just went and pulled it out of the dash. You're right, it comes out very easily, but it's very unfinished without anything in there. Does Porsche make an empty pocket for it? Anyone know how much the CD holder costs if I can't get a pocket?

Yes. 996 552 253 01 01C Porsche calls it "Shelf". The last digit is the trim match 01C is Satin Black (for my MY99). The last code will need to change to match your interior. I paid $31.78 (price minus my PCA discount) at a dealer.

It is possible to buy another empty pocket just like the one that is already there. My dealer gave me one, but they are quite cheap if you order one.

Indycindy, Don. My floor mats don't overlap the sides like that. What are the mats you are using? Did you guys do anything unusual with the ashtray? I would rather have a coin holder or some other storage device than an ashtray..... I wish I could upgrade to a glove box too. The one on your car looks nice and clean.

Gretch..That pic was an early one. I have the Bose stereo option and it creates a hump on the passenger side. Love the pedals......What I had in mind for the ashtray was just to replace the insert. This is because I have the light wood interior and the non-smokers tray will cost a fortune to replace in that form factor. Point me in the direction where I can purchase the non-smokers tray and I will see what can be done. Is that a raised arm rest I see there too? great idea, you need to be a contortionist to get the original equipment open if you are sitting in the drivers seat. You have done a really nice job "finishing" your car.

The non-smokers tray consists of the tray and a rubber pad. The tray is only available in two finishes -- D05 - Granite Grey (for MY99 only) and A03 - Black. Here are the part numbers: 996 552 096 01 (color code) - Shelf 996 552 996 00 Rubber insert I think I paid about $40 for the tray and $5 for the pad at my dealer.

So it sounds like I am SOL unless there is a way to attach the top face plate (mine is light wood finish) to the tray body......... Thanks for the info..

Why don't you get the non-smokers tray and have Eric paint it your exterior color (or another exterior color) It might work well with the wood interior.

I prefer the ashtray! I like the flip lid and keep change in there!

Dranon, That is the approach I would like to take, except remove the ash tray and have a utility "bin" in its place. Don, I don't think the gards red would work with the wood......Thanks for the thought though...

I hate the look of the Cassette tray as well. Don't know the last time I played a tape. Not sure if I want an empty tray or the CD holder. Anyone know how much the CD tray is?

I paid $31.78 (with PCA discount) for the blank shelf to replace the CD Tray. The part number is: 996 552 253 01 01C and is only available in Satin Black (the 01C part of the part number).

I just checked how much I paid for the shelf, and it was from Sunsetimports.com (Oregon)--they sell parts for cost + 15% handling (I believe you can't live in Oregon or Washington). The list was $31.78, cost $20.64 + 3.10 (the 15%) = 23.74 plus shipping. Not big bucks savings for this item, but a nice % discount if you're looking for more expensive items. They also sell Tequipment and Selection items this way.
