Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
While the factory does not necessitate the changing of fluids after break in, I agree that it is well worth the $$ to get all that break in crap out of your system and filter.
Leading evidence: 'Replace of fluids' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace of fluids' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

When they're done, they change the oil and filter and off they go.

I always change the oil around 500 miles, just to be sure.

Suggestion
It's also good not to run high rpm when the engine is cold even after it is broken in.

Suggestion
I'd be curious to know what kind of break in period the racing group uses on their engines.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My second 996 ('03) just arrived...now I'm suffering through the break-in period. I kept my first ('02) 996 below 4200RPM for around 2K miles, but since then I've been told by both owners and by Porsche technicians that this is unnecessary, maybe even detrimental.
What's the story? Did y'all break your cars in by-the-book? Many people say that your Porsche should be broken in how you expect to drive it.
Any thoughts?
Cheers,

I think nowadays the main concern during break-in is not the bearings but the cam lobes. Apart from that, if you want it tight drive it slow, if you want it fast, drive it fast.
A good rule for the life of the car is to keep the throttle openning small (quarter?) while the oil is cold...
I'd mentioned in an earlier thread that my dealers service techs say the break in period is absurd because the engines are hot tested at the factory. their comment is the period is to get drivers used to the car, thus minimize inexperienced porsche drivers wrapping their cars around trees, etc.
I'd be curious to know what kind of break in period the racing group uses on their engines.
The GT3 Cup car engines that I'm aware of are broken in on a dyno, not by driving around. They usually start out running them at moderate rpms and gradually take them up to full throttle over a 1-2 hour period. When they're done, they change the oil and filter and off they go.
For a street car engine, I've always been told the important thing is to vary the rpm. Remember that you're also breaking in the other systems on the car like the brakes, tranny, diff, axles, tires, etc.
As others have said, a few hundred miles of varying driving conditions should be sufficient. I always change the oil around 500 miles, just to be sure. It's also good not to run high rpm when the engine is cold even after it is broken in. Get some good heat cycles into the brakes and tires before you push too hard. Also allow the tranny to loosen up and get used to the shifter and clutch engagement so that you don't take a chance on a missed gear or over-rev when you start to push the car hard.

Good point on breaking-in the car's other systems. I've noticed a marked improvement in braking after a few hundred miles on my previous (986,996) new Porsches. Any other thoughts?

A service tech once told me that the engines can run at 150MPH+ all day long out from the factory. It's really the tranny (ESPECIALLY tiptronic) and tires/brakes that need breaking in.
Still, you have to respect the fine piece of machinery that it is - I personally would not abuse it too much for at least the first 500-1000 miles.
