So the tips are giving you hint to reduce oil change interval, and drive farther and faster, and especially to boil the water out of the oil pretty often.

The dealership has another idea - replace the tips to see if I have a bend or weld which has been damaged thus causing surface rust.

Use short trips where the exhaust doesn't get fully up

Suggestion

If the car has been historically used for short trips where the exhaust doesn't get fully up to temp, moisture can collect in the tips and cause them to look rust colored.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

A while back I mentioned that the inside of my exhasut tips are always an orangey sortof rusty color opposed to black or gray.I walked around my dealership looking at all the used 996's - all of them have the more expected black or gary soot on the inside of the tips... It was stated it could be the result of an octane booster, which seems to have this affect on the exhaust. However, I discussed this with the original owner and he states, no booster was ever added??!!??!! It seems to be more the driver side tip. Both get this rusty film, but the drivers side is more affected. Dealership is blaming everything from the me living at the beach to El Nino. Any ideas?? Phattey...

POST 2Original post

If the car has been historically used for short trips where the exhaust doesn't get fully up to temp, moisture can collect in the tips and cause them to look rust colored. I've seen this on my own car. I imagine that living in an area with above normal humidity levels could make this even more common. A good hard drive or a DE usually changes them back to the normal black color. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Karl

POST 3Original post

Mine are the same color you describe. I live in south Florida where it's humid all the time.

POST 4Original post

Must just be oxidation then, if the engine and exhaust don't warm fully, the water as a combustion byproduct never boils off. Essentially acid rain, same thing going on in your engine oil, sorry to say. This is the main reason why short trip mileage is affects component durability more than highway. So the tips are giving you hint to reduce oil change interval, and drive farther and faster, and especially to boil the water out of the oil pretty often. For sure if you park it for days at a time try to put it away hot. Not a bad thing with a 911! The entire exhaust system after the manifold is only about two feet long, an hour of labor per side to change it if it lasts a year or two shorter than it might have. Don't lose any sleep.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hmmmm... Well I like the drive further and faster concept.. The dealership has another idea - replace the tips to see if I have a bend or weld which has been damaged thus causing surface rust. Kind of a stretch, but I'll let 'em have at it. The car defienlty warms up and get's it's legs stretched good. Every weekend I put 150-300 miles on road trips. Usually driving pretty hard too. However, maybe I should drive more and harder(someone's gotta' do it !!). Looks like others may have this little issue as well. I'm not going to get too concerned, based on folks stating it really isn't a probelm. I was mostly worried that the car was running to lean based on no black or gray soot in the tips. But the dealerhsip says ODBII won't allow that to happen.. I'll keep you guys posted as the mystery unfolds, but I agree that it must be condensation in the exhaust. Phattey
