I adjusted the coilovers to raise the ride height about half an inch and dropped the air pressure a few PSI to make the car tolerable for DD.

I've had Sumitomos come on three cars that I've purchased used, including my current 996.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Do you have any suggestions on improving the ride comfort on stock 996 C2? Which shocks and/or springs do you suggest.
My DD being Honda Odyssey, I do enjoy the "harsh" ride of 996. But it really beats me up on San Jose, CA roads. Roads here are just terrible. It has F:225/40-18, R:285/30-18.
I am going to go over Hwy 17 this weekend to get more feel for it, but it might not be long before I seriously consider putting something in there to improve the ride comfort.
Will just changing springs improve. or do I want to consider something like Bilstein shocks?
Thank you.
Depending on your mileage almost anything you change in the suspension is going to go the other direction in terms of ride comfort. Even new OEM shocks will be stiffer than your worn ones and there are no less stiff springs that I know of.
I think Cuda's suggestion is on target. I find that even 2-3 pounds below the correct tire pressure makes a significant difference in highway ride comfort.
What suspension package do you have? Aftermarket, standard stock, or sport package? How many miles on your car? If you have the standard USA spec suspension you can't really get much softer. Worn out shocks will make the car feel rougher because they are no longer damping suspension motion, a fresh standard suspension might be the best bet.
I had this problem on a BMW. I downgraded to 17" wheels and made a huge improvement.
Realistically you can't get softer suspension than the original US spec suspension on the car.
The best bet is to get more sidewall on the tire and that's 17".
The factory 17" ten spoke wheels that came standard on the MK2 996 look great on the car. Part 99636212802
I think it has stock suspension, but I will check.
The car has 52000 miles on it. I have not driven other 996 so I have no idea if the ride is "normal" for 996, or mine is on the harsh side.
Good suggestion on lowering psi.
Maybe it's me, but the suspension feels harsher, less responsive to bumps and cracks and more 'rumbly' when the air pressure is lower than the factory spec...I find when I set it to factory spec the springs/struts seem to do a better job of dampening
I'd say about 70% left.
I was going 90 mph on hwy over the weekend, went over what I think was a bridge joint, it just felt like I went over it with no rubber. Perhaps going with F:50, R:40 profile is what I need.
No worries. Since 996 is new to me, I am just trying to learn about it the best I can. I can always try to find something else. Since it is only week 2 of the ownership, I should give it more time. Need to get more driving time to truly understand what this car is all about. This is my weekend driver, and I wanted something that is on the opposite side of the scale to my DD. This I think is just that. I also wanted something that hopefully will not depreciate too far from what it is now. I considered Boxster but felt was bit underpowered.
Check the age of the tires as well. Old rubber even with 70% tread left is awful. Your tire store can read the DOT codes for you, or you can use a tire mfg date code search here on Rennlist.
Since you don't know what you have, check at the dealers the options the car came with. If it says anything like "Special Chassis Rigidly Tuned" or "Sport pack" depending on the year. Then you have US M030 sport suspension, which is unforgiving on rough roads at recommended pressure. In that case you could go back to base/stock suspension for more comfort.
Check your option codes here to see if you have some variety of sport suspension:

Here's how to read your tire sidewall, old tires are just as bad as worn out tires:

17" wheels are another great suggestion. Because most prefer an 18" they can be had CHEAP. Check your local Craigslist or the RL parts for sale forum.
I find the ride level with 18" wheels on my 996 to be acceptable. Just about what I'd expect in a sports car of this caliber. Also have fiddled with pressures but didn't notice a huge difference. What I do find objectionable is the noise level at freeway speeds. On rural back roads 40-50 mph is fine but 60-80 on the expressway is borderline deafening. My rear rubber is brand new Sumitomo HTR ZIII's.
On the Tire Rack website the noise rating for these tires is average but they are LOUD.
Smaller wheels plus a taller sidewall. Anything else you do is going to make it harder.
When I bought my 996, it was equipped with full aftermarket suspension, and it was slammed. I adjusted the coilovers to raise the ride height about half an inch and dropped the air pressure a few PSI to make the car tolerable for DD.
I've had Sumitomos come on three cars that I've purchased used, including my current 996. In all cases I couldn't wait to get them off. My 996 sounded like a pickup with mud tires installed, my current Vredestein snow tires are a dream in comparison. I hate Sumitomos and will never purchase a new set.
Like others have said:
- Downgrade to 17" wheels.
- Get Touring Comfort tires(opposite of performance tires with stiffer sidewalls)
- Koni FSD Shocks
- Make sure you have the touring suspension and not the m030 sport suspension(can check under the hood sticker)
- Make sure your engine mounts haven't leaked fluid and are still good(or get new OEM mounts)
- Lastly, get one of those seat pads that have built in massage/heat
Like others have said, a set of 17" tires and wheels will make all the difference, best bang for the buck. I think the 17" setup makes it almost a "fluffy" ride. Great for long distance, where the 18s can wear you out. There is always a good selection of 996 17"s and 18"s on the local valley CL.
LOL... I am up to 4 sets of tires and wheels for my 996. (1 set of 17s and 3 sets of 18s so I have direct knowledge of the "fluffyness")
Who wants a "fluffy" ride in a 911? And if a "fluffy" ride is what you want then maybe a 911 is the wrong car.
Car as delivered to US from factory is TOO soft, TOO high and rides like crap.
oh please. people use their cars for different things. I would prefer a soft ride in my daily driver 911. Perhaps people have even more raw cars on the weekends and want a softer 911 for the week.
save your judgements

I agree. I looked at comparison tests and took the best riding tire I could find that was high performance. I had good luck with the falken zienx-ze-912. I put the performance tires on my 964 which is a weekend car. The handling with falkens is still amazing to me for a daily driver.
"Soft" is definitely a relative word here but I do think Porsche did a good job between comfort and handling in the regular Carrera with the standard touring pack. For those looking for more aggressive handling with comfort taking a back seat, there was the m030, x74 options.
I guess my term of "fluffy" are those that want an even softer ride than what a standard Carrera with a touring pack offered. THOSE are the people that should be looking for a different ride, maybe one with a Magnetorheological dampers to get their cake and eat it too. My $.02
