Suggestion
I really like (and this is my personal opinion as engineer, not trying to lecture anyone) the approach of their solution (with two US patents), focusing on improving reliability of the engine, with improved SKF bearings, with wider shaft/bearing axle and clean oil injection from the existing output in the engine head, but with no major modifications to the engine design (like different oil filter/housing or metal to metal components where the block is not designed for)
Leading evidence: 'Install but everything is ok' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'remaining life of the defective m96' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean oil injection' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I also have a DOF from Tuners, installed on my 996.1 for about 4 years now.

I installed the TuneRS IMS kit on my 2000 996.1 C4 Cab earlier this year when I did my engine out maintenance.

The bearing is under the oil level in the crank case,, especially with a UAOS installed with an extra 2 qts oil level.

He used their IMS and said really good things about them.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Never liked all the imsb kits offered for the m96 that use a regular production bearing and charge 10-20 times its cost to us Porsche guys,,, like its a special made only for m96 bearing.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Does anyone have any experience with this kit?
https://tunersmotorsports.com/trs-de...rect-oil-feed/
It's the oil fed IMS bearing kit. I'm having a hard time finding much info or others with experience with them.
I've done searches both here and in FB forums. But "tuners" does not exactly produce original search results...
I was in Florida in February. I went to their shop based on a guy on youtube that basically never touched an engine before and rebuilt his. Forget his name, but he is an english guy, maybe "tiny garage....". He used their IMS and said really good things about them. The owner was there when I went. He was really great with answering all of my questions and lot's of advice on the 996 platform. He said they developed their version years ago and have had 0 failures. I will he doing mine this fall and will be using their IMS kit.
There are 5-6 different " Brands" of replacement IMSB's available for the M96 .....but ALL still have some risk EXCEPT for the "Plain Bearing design of The Solution" ...
It eliminates all "rolling " elements and replaces them with a Hydro-Dynamic Sliding Design that keeps from having excessive debris or excessive slack/clearance when rolling elements fail and fall out ...
A much more robust design that even if it fails it is a "soft failure"...
The downside is that it is double the price of the other options..
This is interesting, plan to replace my IMS bearing later this year, was thinking of going with the solution but it's so $$$. And no warranty (user installed), and if you don't send back your old bearing, they don't put you in the database. I understand that's their policy, but I don't have to like it. The price point of this sounds reasonable, and I plan to drop the motor so installing the oil line would be no biggie. Still might go with the solution.

are really professional and trust worthy
I had my car maintained at TuneRS for 7 years while I was living in Florida and I totally recommend them.
Regarding the DOF, I have it installed in my car since 20K miles now with no issues or whatsoever. I really like (and this is my personal opinion as engineer, not trying to lecture anyone) the approach of their solution (with two US patents), focusing on improving reliability of the engine, with improved SKF bearings, with wider shaft/bearing axle and clean oil injection from the existing output in the engine head, but with no major modifications to the engine design (like different oil filter/housing or metal to metal components where the block is not designed for)
Also, the fact that it has been used in motorsport with the Spec Boxsters in the PCA series for so many years with no problems was for me an additional factor to decide.
I also have a DOF from Tuners, installed on my 996.1 for about 4 years now. Seems to be fine and worry free....
I like all the guys down there...
Got to do my 996.2 imsb soon, its a tip and got about 37,000 miles on it. No bore score and engine seems to run strong with its fabspeed full exhaust. its loud. Anyhow, think on this tip tranny the engine & tranny both need to come out so a full while your in there deferred maintenance will be done. Been dreading thi$ job, been putting it off for a while now.
Never liked taping into the troubled/starvation prone lubrication system of the 996. I want every drop of oil going to the needed m96 failure points.
Might just take out the ims bearing and go down to the bearing shop, match it up with the highest quality one I can find, pull off the seals, install it and call it a day. The bearing is under the oil level in the crank case,, especially with a UAOS installed with an extra 2 qts oil level. It shouldn't need any more oil than being under 'water' oil level. The ims bearing is nothing special, its a regular production number bearing. Never liked all the imsb kits offered for the m96 that use a regular production bearing and charge 10-20 times its cost to us Porsche guys,,, like its a special made only for m96 bearing. I'll keep an eye on it and oil tests like i've already been doing,,, time will tell....

I installed the TuneRS IMS kit on my 2000 996.1 C4 Cab earlier this year when I did my engine out maintenance. It installed well and they provided good support. Not that many miles on it since installed but everything is ok.
My 2 cents... You have to wonder why those Mezger Turbo and GT guys never complain of IMS bearing failure. You also have to scratch your head and wonder why the other end of the intermediate shaft on the Carrera's M96 engines don't fail too. Why? Because they're plain bearings - proven technology even the ancient Egyptians understood!
LN and FSI spend more than 10 years in research and development creating the oil-fed, plain bearing design of the IMS Solution. That's the one I chose.
No head scratching for me, its plain' and simple. No question the LN/FSI 'plain bearing' is the best design, getting rid of sealed ball bearings... where Mezger guys know they never should have been there in the first place.
Its also $2000 just for the kit not including installation. Some of us that have a $20-30k 996 car can't see the justification in putting 20% of the cars cost back into its defective imsb. When a much cheaper solution will work for probably the remaining life of the defective m96. Big mony into an engine we all know will have way "out of round cylinders by the time its got 100k miles "(says Charles among other m96 experts) Especially when another $10-20k(+) needed deferred maintenance is also needed to be dropped into the car sooner or latter...
Lets face it, the Ln/FSI plain bearing will out live in perfect condition long after the rest of the m96 is in the junk yard...
Now, with the $30-40k upgraded re-engineered nik'd engine rebuild, yes the $2000 LN Plain Bearing ims makes complete sense. On a oem m96 car with the normal high miles, not so much....

Anytime the topic of IMS comes up I like to remind of the following straight from the Porsche maintenance schedule, which many owners follow religiously:
When these cars don't get used properly and get oil changes at 5k miles / 6 months like they should, can we really be surprised? Just like you can kill a nikasil plated and rebuilt engine from bad over-fueling you can do the same with most other IMS bearings if you don't drive and maintain the car properly. /Fin.
If I were putting a ball bearing back in the shaft, I'd want it to be on the load capacity of the 6305 like what Hartech puts in their rebuilds, but of course that involves a lot of work opening up the engine and changing out the shaft and not feasible for most owners. Personally, I don't like where the DOF pulls it's oil from and the fact that their kits include the same OE bearings (e.g. 6204) seems problematic. But if it works for you, more power to you. Not trying to touch a nerve with folks here, I gave my personal opinion bouncing off what PT3 mentioned.
