Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I really like the new GT3 but I'm torn on whether I should get one or not. My thoughts are that by the time my GT3 is delivered to me the 997 maybe out only a few months after that, I have allocation #6. Also the rumor that the 997 will have the DSG transmission really appeals to me and is really weighing down on my decision. BTW does anyone have any idea how long after the 997 is introduced will there be a GT3 equivalent of it? Also it would make more sense to me financially to wait for the 997, but we all know how that goes, when you want it you want it! Help!!!

POST 2Original post

I would get the 996 GT3. In my opinion it is the ultimate car. If you are into tracking your car and desire the ultimate involvement when you drive, the GT3 is the way to go. Plus, it will most likely hold its value very well. Probably better than the 997 since it is a limited production vehicle.

POST 3Original post

The GT3 is the way to go. The GT3 motor with the titanium rods is stronger than even the Turbo and GT2. With a GT3R intake system and throttle control valves for each cylinder rather than one controlling all six, you can get even more power out of it AND not have to worry about the motor handling it. The 997 will be a massed produced car, while it may be nice, I think the GT3 is the one

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Does anyone know if and when a 997 GT3 or equivalent will happen.

POST 5Original post

Bird in the hand, and all that jazz... Who knows what Porsche will be charging for a 997.

POST 6Original post

Make your decision when the dealer actually gets a build date for your allocation. At that time you will have more info on the 997 and the experiences of GT3 owners. While I agree that a GT3 is a great car, I disagree with everyone immediately recommending it to you without knowing further details about what you are looking for. Do you plan to track the car? Do you want a daily driver with creature comforts? How important is exclusivity to you? What is your financial situation (the difference in price can be as much as $30,000.00)? I ask the last question because you touched on it in your post. If you change six figure sports cars every few months, obviously the decision is different then if you are scraping to buy your first Porsche. I wouldn't put much emphasis on resale because you really can never predict how the market will react or how many cars Porsche will ultimately build. Will a previous body style GT3 have stronger resale than a new body style 997. Too many variables to predict.

I wouldn't hold out for the DSG tranny though. Even if they provide one, I'm not sure it's worth waiting for. I just sold a 2002 M3 w/ SMG because it just wasn't what I was looking for in terms of driver involvement, even though it was convenient in those all too often Beltway traffic jams. I wouldn't order another car with a paddle shift transmission. Karl

POST 8Original post

Karl - I agree. Even if DSG is the best possible auto tranny, it's still not going to be an satisfying as doing it yourself. It removes one of the fundamental driver inputs (clutch pedal) from the equation. Giving the driver less to do is not a benefit IMHO.

POST 9Original post

How is that possible - 997 GT3 mid 2005. Doesn't the coupe enter a year or so before the GT3? How does Porsche bring out a GT3, Turbo Cab, C4s Cab and Targa 4s as an 04 model and change the design months later? I guess that is what hapened with the C2s, but, I'd be pissed if I sunk ~$150K into a Turbo Cab and found out the model was changeing the following year. I also read on the AutoSpies website that the Boxster was being redone as an 05 model and the 996 as an 06 model. Rumors. Nothing more. Anyone else know anything there?

POST 10Original post

I wouldn't buy the first MY of any new car including Porsche. There already are several TSBs for the Cayenne..and they are still coming for the 996 after 5 years of the series. The last MY should be the best. It was in 83, 88, 94, 98, 03
