Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Came across an E36 M3, modified at least with intake and exhaust and possibly suspension given the lowered stance, on Pacific Coast Hwy last night heading north on wide open road...we raced several times from 55mph to aprx 120mph and my '01 C4 stock was able to pull slightly each time. In 3rd I would get a huge jump on the M3. Turns were 85mph+ and pretty nasty. C4 felt a bit unstable in turns, too much roll. Wonderful experience given the high praise I have for the E36 M3; I owned 3 including a Dinan 5sp.

POST 2Original post

roll in turns, do you mean actuall roll or do you have vertical motion? my C4S with stock setup (totally stock) doesn't roll, but vertically very unsettled with high speed turns. my friends 993 with PSS9 was perfect. i will have PSS9 soon.

POST 3Original post

Stock C4 and C4S have different suspensions. Hence, the body roll for Dustman (C4), and the flat pancake for John (C4S). I've run in a Blue Group with an E36 M3 at Beaver Run, PA. The driver and I have simillar experiences. The M3 got left behind, almost lapped him but ran out of time . On the next run, he spun out . No damage to the car, thank goodness, just to pride. Im just beginning to explore the limits of the C4S. I did note the unsettled feel at high speed turns, but I thought that it was just me not being smooth enough. I'm still a sucker for OEM, so I may go with the X74 (or is it X73?)

POST 4Original post

Why not try the same thing but during a driver ed event run by pca? You'll have a blast. I drive a 2001 c4 and have had much fun reeling in and passing m3's.

POST 5Original post

I Tried with an 2003 M3 SMG with my 2002 C4 Tiptronic cabriolet from 0-230km/h at the 1st gear the M3 jumps and my front bumber sticks beside the M3 door and the 2nd gear the M3 jumps again but later on at the 3rd gear i start to reach it and pass it slowly ----------- however i tried again using a special method !! but i feel it ruins the gear before i start the race i keep my left leg on the brakes and the right one on the accelerator and raise the RPM a bit under 2 when the race start i release the brake and stop fully hard on the accelerator pedal this way i be able to stick beside the M3 till 120-130 then pass it slowly

POST 6Original post

Coincidentally I have a '99 E36 M3 with software & intake and had a run in right out of the blue with a 996 C2. Let me say that I do not condone any sort of street racing, only on the track, but as the road was completely clear and rural so I wanted to see how the M3 would fare. I found that from about 50 mph up to 110 mph the 996 would pull slightly in each gear then I would catch up at the top of third and fourth. This was especially interesting as I am currently looking to buy a 993 and answered many questions as to the performance difference between the two cars. I expect that on the track I would pass this particular driver as he was most likely inexperienced with handling the 996 at speed. As always, on the track it comes down to the driver.
