Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that contain suggestions
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suggestion
If I could get the insurance to pay for fixing it, I'd make them pay for a whole new cluster (VDO uses recovered LCDs from other failed clusters as no one can seem to source new ones) so you can at least start fresh.
Leading evidence: 'Use recovered lcds' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Use recovered lcds' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Still need to get it fixed, but I'm still waiting on the Cayenne to get out of the shop so the 996 isn't my DD anymore.
I recently rear ended a car and needed front bumper replacement. When I drove the car into the shop my instrument cluster was working fine. When I picked up the car (2001 996 w/approx. 86,000 mi) there was (still is) spidering on the middle LCD display. Can there be a connection between the collision and the condition? My insurance co. called two Porsche dealerships (Circle and BHills) and was told it was a coincidence. I have spoken to a private Tech as well as one for my Zone on pca.org and both have stated that it was possible, akin to a person who starts hurting two or three days after an accident.
Any info greatly appreciated........
Scott
You should post the pic.
That "spidering" could very well have been caused by the polarized glass in the LCD flexing and cracking during the accident.
Crude explanation:
The LCD then bleeds in to the cracks. The LCD crystals are no longer controlled in relation to the polarized glass sandwich letting the backlight bleed through.

Thank you for the reply and suggestion. Makes sense to me! I am sending the cluster to VDO in Arizona and with some more "positive" replies I am going to file a secondary claim with my insurance company for my cost(s).
Congrats, but more than likely its a coincidence. Its a not uncommon issue unfortunately. Our ODO LCD went a few hundred miles ago (01 67-ish). Still need to get it fixed, but I'm still waiting on the Cayenne to get out of the shop so the 996 isn't my DD anymore.
I don't agree and don't believe in coincidence! Too much evidence to the contrary...obviously my ins. co didn't want to risk not covering it given my unique circumstances. Just putting it out there so the info is available. Believe what you will!
I'm not saying it's not possible that it's related to the accident, just that there is enough evidence out there of these failures happening without being in an accident that it is more likely that the LCD chose a coincidental time to fail.
Now what would be an interesting correlation to make is that for those of us that have had LCD failures, was the car
ever
in an accident even if the LCD failure didn't happen around the same time. She rear-ended someone in ours and it's been rear-ended itself 3 times. The front-end and first rear end were 6+ years before the failure and the last two rear ends happened after it failed.
If I could get the insurance to pay for fixing it, I'd make them pay for a whole new cluster (VDO uses recovered LCDs from other failed clusters as no one can seem to source new ones) so you can at least start fresh. The insurance is probably going to be a lot less happy to shell out $2k+ though
The "evidence out there" is precisely what I was contesting, especially cuz I
don't believe in coincidence.
My gut feeling is that one can't extrapolate LCD failure to
any
involvement in an accident but I am no expert in LCD tech. I achieved the result I wanted (covered by ins.) and am very content w/that. I also believe that my ins. co. was willing to cover this cuz I told them how "inexpensive" my fix would be as opposed to the alternative ("less happy to shell out $2k+").
If nothing else, I hope this info can contribute to the "database" re: LCD failure/front end collision
