Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Ok fellas, just seeking some genuine opinions. I don't want to incite another 10 page diatribe about whether the IMS issue is real.
Subject: Extended 3rd party warranty coverage vs. preemptive DOF solution/RMS replacement.
My current extended warranty language:
ENGINE-
"
All internal lubricated parts, cylinder block and heads, factory installed turbocharger units, flywheel, fuel pump, manifolds, oil pan and oil pump, seals and gaskets, timing gears and chain or belts, valve covers, water pump, engine mounts, thermostat, thermostat housing and gasket."
I'm struggling with doing the "solution" DOF and RMS (and clutch, while there).
Turns out the gearbox is covered, but not the clutch...it isn't slipping, but the pedal is a little high, so maybe in the cards this year. Once I do the clutch, I'll be compelled to upgrade the IMS bearing and RMS...I mean, who wouldn't?
The engine sounds fine, using the spin-on adapter and magnetic drain plug...and will cut the filters and Blackstone the oil on an ongoing basis.
Would you guys dive in now, or wait for a clutch job based on my current warranty status?
Thanks in advance for opinions
Agreed - let it ride while you have the warranty until the clutch comes due. My clutch started slipping in 3rd/4th when accelerating fairly hard @ freeway speeds, and by the time I got it into my indy, I had just started wearing down into a couple of the rivets. Had I waited much longer, the flywheel would have been toast. (While it's recommended to replace the flywheel, I elected not to do so since I was plowing money into the bearing.)
Thanks gents. Kinda leaning that way too.
Forgot to mention car has 76k miles.
My warranty is good for 3 years and is renewable for another 3 if I renew prior to reaching
100k miles.
My guess is the clutch will force my hand at some point possibly this year.
Thanks again
Be careful not to assume the warranty will get you a new engine in case of a catastrophic failure. The fine print usually includes a provision that if the cost of the repair exceeds the cost of the car, so they have the option to reimburse you for the "value" of the car. You may be thinking thats $20K. They are thinking its $15K, or less.
Good point- this warranty actually says "...shall not exceed the
price paid
for the vehicle..." That gives me some leverage against them devaluing it arbitrarily, I think.
lol
If you are going to do the DOF when you do the clutch, waiting gives the added advantage of allowing more experience with the DOF approach to be tested in other folks cars and for more miles. Given a failure rate of only about 1% per car/year on the original, there should be more than a handful to give a feel-good about it.
A certain skepticism about new things is always healthy.
Does anyone actually have experience collecting on these warranties? I paid for mine with some skepticism. Comforted myself that I was buying ims insurance plus being covered when the inevitable part goes bad. I have carchex and I am struggling with same decision. Change ims or wait. 2004 c2 cab. 60,000 miles with warranty for 3 more years or 96000 miles.
^^ I met with what I think is my new P-car indy yesterday (Ken from Zuffenhausen Motors). He is an authorized Raby installer. Very bright guy. He ballparked the cost of going in preventatively for the:
clutch
AOS
RMS
IMS upgrade
at between $6-7K ( $7k if DOF Solution)...that's a fair chunk when added to the $5k I paid for the warranty already. I haven't decided what to do yet, but at least I found my Indy.
