Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Last month the forum was very helpful after I got a misfire and a CEL after I washed the car. The next day it recovered without incident until today when I washed the car again Again bad misfiring and he CEL. So I am assuming coils are starting to go. Anybody have any other concerns that I should considering. My biggest question though is whether there is any problem with going with the PelicanParts($45) coils versus the OEM($360). Just realized that the OEM(Suncoast) is per set and therefore $60 per coil. So this is not much of a difference. Any thoughts about whether there is a difference in quality? POST 2Original post

The Beru coils from Pelican will be perfectly fine.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Imo00, ECS has a ignition service pack with Bosch coils and plugs. Any thoughts on that? I am taking the same advice you gave me last time and letting things dry overnight and then restarting. Misfire was worse this time(?>1 cylinder). I had also read that salt environment can hurry the deterioration of the coil packs. This has been a harsh winter with a ton of salt on the roads so maybe there is something to that argument.

POST 4Original post

Beru = OEM, just without the Porsche part number and tax.

Looks fine Bosch coils and plugs for $48 per cyl is not bad. http://www.ecstuning.com/ES2598420/

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

What about using the coils from Advance auto parts? Just curious because they are more expensive than the Pelican or ECS or Suncoast? However they are just down the road!

Same price as the BMWs, I know because just changed on our wagon. No Porsche premium on those.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have decided to go ahead and do my own coils/plugs. Passenger side heat shield comes off easily but the driver's side is hanging up on its own attachment peg. It appears that the heat shields are identical on both sides, so the end piece on the passenger leads when you remove it. The driver side it trails and in so doing snags on its own attachment. Does anybody have any ideas/tip etc to get this out.

POST 9Original post

I just had this off on a buddy's '99 last week. Just rotate the shield about 90 degrees and then pull it out. Just wiggle it, it will slide out.

I faced the exact same problem. On MkII (ours), you have to bend the shield a little bit to clear the peg. No worries. You won't hurt it. Just bend it back after install.

+1. Just tweak it a little and it will come right out....

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Gentlemen, thank you for all the advice. Unfortunately I am apparently weak(actually the problem is that it's my DD. so I cannot afford to have it sitting while I wait for parts) so it will be going to the dealer tomorrow. I will clearly have to eat the cost
