I figured it might make replacing the AOS, plugs, and fixing oil leaks a little easier with the engine out.

Might be great time to change your tranny mount too.

(I will be using a "low lift" transmission jack from Harbor Freight to remove the trans from under the car)

I'm lucky with the use of a lift....it made my life so much easier.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello,
I have been reading this forum off and on since I bought my 2001 996 Cab two years ago but this is my first post.
My car is a 2001 with about 98,000 miles now. It's all stock except for modifying the mufflers with the Gundo Hack within the first 2 weeks of ownership. In the two years I've owned it I've had to replace the coolant expansion tank, water pump, engine mounts, and front brakes. Now I'm getting ready to pull my 6-speed transmission in the next couple of weeks to send off for repairs as well as replacing the clutch, flywheel, plugs, plug tubes, AOS, and fixing a couple of minor oil leaks.
It would be appreciated if you all could help with the following questions:
1) How high do I need to have the car on jack stands in order to remove the transmission? (I will be using a "low lift" transmission jack from Harbor Freight to remove the trans from under the car)
2) What "special" tools will be required for the job I will be doing? (torx bits, square drives, etc.)
3) Would it be worth my time to just go ahead and pull the whole engine while I have the trans out? I figured it might make replacing the AOS, plugs, and fixing oil leaks a little easier with the engine out. If I pull the engine, how high will the car need to be for that?
I worked in the race car industry and then specialized in transaxles for formula cars for over ten years so I am comfortable working on cars. I am just seeking tips and advice from those of you that have done this job before.
Thanks in advance.

I did this just recently. I'm lucky with the use of a lift....it made my life so much easier. You will want to get the car up as high as you can. 18"-24" would work. If you pull the motor you will want even more height.
The bolts around the tranny are all hex head except for a 8mm 12 point socket head cap screw. Might be great time to change your tranny mount too.
Take your time and walk away when you get frustrated. Good Luck!
Thank you both for your replies. I'll give it a try in a couple of weeks and decide at that time if I am feeling ambitious enough to remove the engine too or just work with it in the car.
Thanks again.

Travis,
I am in Richardson and I have dropped my transmission several times, let me know if I can help.
Per the info already given, you'll want the car very high but other than that it is fairly straight forward.
Most painful part of the process is the access to the upper bolts on the transmission.
the bolts are different from each other so do not forget to mark them so you remember which one goes where
6Ta1, I will probably take you up on your offer and contact you in a couple of weeks just to get some advice.
Sandersd, I'm ordering the manual today.
Thanks!
